upgrade advice needed

Best to wait for release of Zen2 Ryzens.
Line up data should be told in next week at Computex.

I’m running on the same platform as you. After 7 years I’m hoping to upgrade to Zen2 this summer.. I feel that I’ve waited long enough and an upgrade might actually be worth it now. Watch for news from the AMD keynote tomorrow.

Computex starts in around 20 hours where AMD will reveal their new 7nm Ryzen CPU's together with new PCI-E Gen4 motherboards.
I expect many, especially Sandy and Ivy Bridge users will be upgrading to these, so prepare yourself to read a bunch of tech news :D

SSD an option for you in the mean time? Give you something to tinker with for a couple of weeks until new Ryzen info is available.

still on a gigabyte 7950

If your 7950 (faster than a GTX 1050) is still working fine, then save up since your system is still well balanced. If you really want to upgrade something it should be your gpu. The i5 should still be plenty for a 1660Ti maybe.

Save for Ryzen 3000 or whatever intel has after 9th gen. I miss my 7950.

i must admit the 7950 is a hell of a card, never had any problems with it after so many years.I will probably just change to a better ssd as my kingston started to disapear from bios sometimes, freezing the pc.

I assume the restrict support for new processors will not be a problem to the new motherboards. The only problem would be buying a entry-level motherboard, as the prices are tempting, but as the new Ryzen and motherboards aren't that far, something mid-tier as were the b350 and b450 (at their time) would allow you extra funds for the CPU.
Memory-wise, prices are down now, but 16GB would be my call, with chance to expand to 32GB when funds/needs arrives. At the moment, unless you really need, 16GB is enough.
One good news is that you don't need the more expensive B-Die Samsung for memory to get the most of the Ryzen. That was a problem when I built my rig.

Had one HD7970 until few months ago. Amazing card, considering cost me about £300 and was delivering decent performance.
My Samsung shows as 98% life left on HWINFO, but it's about 3 years old.
As Orange Nexus recommended, upgrading just the GPU would give you a nice upgrade without parting with all your funds.
Considering the price drops for GPUs now, there's plenty of choices at the £200 mark, which wouldn't be too much of a contrast to your actual system.

I like Samsung SSDs. Had Intel before, not a problem, but when I ought mine, Samsung had better specs at the price range I was looking for.
