Current system is about 5 years old now running a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SOC motherboard with 16GB of 2400Mhz DDR2 Ram and an I7 4770. Recently upgraded my graphics card to RTX 2080 so not looking to change that one.

System is mainly used for gaming at 1440p and I want something that is going to push serious fps and last a long time. Thoughts on what I should upgrade to (not concerned about budget but am about value)

Thanks in advance

I'm assuming your games are butter smooth with that setup, so you may as well wait until AMD's next gen of processors launches and get the Ryzen 7 4700.

As he said, seems silly to change just now. wait and get a new ryzen 4000 series or pick up a 3000 as they come down in price. Having said all that I couldn't be happier since upgrading from a 4970K to a Ryzen 3700X however I do a lot more than gaming with the rig so it makes sense.

Actually no they are not. Assassins Creed for example gets around 40-50 fps @ 1440p with ultra settings, and I get similar from most other games too. Its important to note that I have a new monitor with HDR400 and 165Hz which has really highlighted the FPS challenge, and why I am seriously considering the upgrade now.

I upgraded from an I7 4770K with 16GB Ram after I bought my 5700 XT as the 4770K even overclocked to 4.4 is simply not good enough for 1440P.

I bougt a 9900KS at the time as it's a gaming machine only. I would say the performance increase was about 30%

Oh okay, I've just noticed you don't have the K version so that makes sense at stock frequency.

B450 Tomahawk Max and either get a Ryzen 7 3700X as a permanent solution or perhaps get a cheap 3300X to use temporary until Ryzen 4000 is end of line then get a 12 core.

I do have the K version actually, but for some reason whenever I overclock the CPU, even slightly it becomes unstable. Maybe I was just unlucky with my previous purchase :(

Saying that though, I have raised it this morning following a complete reset of the BIOS and I seem to be comfortably running at 3.9 without issues. Still I'm keen to upgrade for other reasons, mainly due to the fact that the Motherboard is kind of old tech now, as it only supports up to DDR2 and has no m.2 slots. My thoughts were getting DDR4 RAM in the upgrade and an M.2 SSD would make a significant difference when coupled with a better, more advanced CPU and motherboard...
