Hello,

I built a new PC in 2020 and now I feel that if needs a refresh. Mainly the CPU and GPU. I game at 1440p so am not fussed about 4k.

My innards are:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X
Mobo: Rog Strix X570-E Gaming
GPU: 2080ti

I don’t want to spend too much as this is intended as a mild refresh.
Thanks in advance.

Hi.

CPU could upgrade to a 5700x3d or 5800x3d should push those frames up .

Your 2080ti is equivalent to a 3070/4060ti so to get a jump in performance your going to have to spend some.

What's your budget ?

I don’t mind keeping the GPU if it’s not worth an upgrade. I play Cyberpunk 2077, BG3 and a general mix between indies, classics and AAA.

You're looking at a 5700X3D and either a 7900XT or 4070 TI Super for that sort of money and they're just about where I'd say you'll see worthwhile uplift from your 2080ti:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,648.97 (includes delivery: £0.00)

If you can stretch you should be able to fit a 4080 Super or 7900XTX for under £1100, I'd look at some benchmarks and decide on what's best for your needs. It's worth noting that there's new GPU's on the horizon, although we're looking at mid range from Intel and AMD and a flagship model from Nvidia. While these might not fit best with your needs, they might have an effect on the rest of the GPU market and cause some price drops, but that's pure speculation on my end.

If you're still on 16GB of RAM I'd consider bumping up to 32GB while you're at it, it's dirt cheap at the moment and games are using more and more of it.

£500 GPU won't give you enough gains.

The 4070ti is about 50% faster than your 2080ti while a 4080 super will be 100% faster but all of your budget.

I think I would get a 5700x3d and sell your 3700x making it about a £120 upgrade which should push your FPS on your 2080ri higher.

Then decide on GPU later

Do you have 32gb of memory ?

Would my current CPU bottleneck a 4080 super or 4070ti?

Yes.

I had a 3700X on a vanilla 4070 and it was noticeably holding things back at 1440P, moving to a 5800X3D saw massive uplift for me in a good number of games.

Higher end cards like the 4080S will be be worse again.

Also, make sure you get the 4070ti Super if you go for one, not the regular 4070ti.

Tbh if you're not set on Nvidia then I'd go for a 7900GRE and a 5800X3D. Then sit tight for another couple of years.

There's very little difference between the 5700X3D and 5800X3D in terms of performance, the latter however is £100 more expensive and imo not worth the extra.

From a 2080ti I'd personally want a bit more uplift than a 7900GRE too tbh given his budget more than supports it.

If I went with the 5700X3D and 4070ti super, would I need an uplift of my 750w psu?

Just dump the main stuff (dump = sell) and buy some new parts, on a new platform.

Only an example:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3.8 GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard
Memory: Patriot Viper Venom 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6600 CL34 Memory
Video Card: Gainward Ghost GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12 GB Video Card

Total: ~£950

You'll get a few hundred for your current gear so well with in your budget. Or wait until the launch of the 9xxx series at the end of July and get a better deal again. In case you weren't aware for the most part a 7600 is better than any X3D on AM4 now, and the 9600X is going to be better again.

I'll make it really clear £300 for an AM4 CPU is a total rip off.
