Hi,

Looking to upgrade from my current 4870 1GB - spending around £100

Looking at getting a used 6850, would a 5870 be a more worthwhile upgrade?

Don't know enough about nVidia cards.

Any advice is appreciated.

Yes a 5870 would be a better upgrade as it has more power, alternatively a 470 from NV would be on the same level, see whats in MM at the time

So a 5870 is better than a 6850....what about a 6870 then?

Or a 4870X2?

Or a 5970 (out of budget)?

Hmm, So a 4870X2 or a 5870 for me I think then, or maybe a 560 TI if i can get one cheap.

Thanks for the advice! :)

Wouldn't bother with the 4870X2 tbh it's old, hot running, not Direct X 11 and if you get any games that don't work with crossfire you're down to exactly the same performance as you have now!

Second hand 5870/5850 would be a much better idea, what's your budget? and what resolution do you game at? EDIT: I'm presuming it's 1080p/1200p judging by your sig?

Budget is around £100 max, less if possible.

Gaming at 1920x1200, everything always on max. Does mean i get around 15FPS in modern games at times, but i don't really notice the low framerates, as i have gamed at them for so long :D

4870 is getting a bit weedy though, and in RIFT sometimes the game drops to like 1FPS and then i do notice it :D

Am aiming at used cards. Never ever had a new card, and don't see why i should start now :D

Second hand 5870s and GTX 470s go for around your budget in the members market, keep your eye out for either of those. Alternatively 5850s and GTX 460 1GBs can be had for around the £70-£85 mark. Any of these would give you a good boost over your current card :)

No probs, nice to see you took my advice on the 4870X2......Obviously had your heart set on one from the start lol ;)

Well, It was a good deal, i kinda jumped on it :P

Some people are just too goddam observant :D

Now i feel like one of those guys that asks for advice then ignores it completely....as there are so many on this forum.. :D Lets hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the ass like it always does for them :P

And since I use my PC as a radiator in the winter the warmth is a bonus (student + heating bill = no £££ :D)
