Hi there, Im looking to upgrade my graphics card which at the moment is a 6600gt. Im not really up to speed on the latest and greatest cards so any help is appreciated. Ive got 400 euros to spend (around £270) although i could stretch a bit more if its worth it. Cheers!

PCI-E, 1gb, athlon 64 3700, Fear, far cry, doom 3, quake 4, call of duty 2, riddick etc. 1280x1024.

If you want a 512MB card, has to be this ... PowerColor ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-048-PC) £270.19 Including VAT. Much cheaper than the 7800GTX & yet its faster.

If you want a 256MB card, has to be this ... Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-CO) £234.94 Including VAT. Same as above but half the ram so a bit slower at very high res.

Very good price considering its performance.

Have you considered the x1800xt 256mb from OcUK? Its under budget at £234. At 1280 it's only about 5 - 10 fps slower than the 512mb version.

EDIT: ACESHIGH beat me to it...

so is it worth going for the 512mb version or is it a waste seen as how the res will only be 1280x1024?

i see there is the powercolour and msi version of the 512mb card is there any difference between these? why the extra few quid for the msi?
Are the Nvidia cards not as good as the radeon in this price range?
Cheers!

You could get an OcUK value 7800GTX for about £280, slightly over budget. Or a 7800GT for £211... but the x1800xt 256mb will beat the latter easily and the former 95% of the time.

I personally don't think there is any point in getting a 512mb version at that res...

So the connect3d x1800xt 256mb is the one to go for? If this is better than a 7800gt is it on par with a 7800gtx but for less money?
What about the Gainward BLISS 7800gt 512mb? How does this compare?

The XT is better than all of em. :)

Theres nothing wrong with the 512mb XT for 1280x1024, i should know. ;)

The 256mb is only 10fps slower at that res.
