Im finding my pc is having problems playing some of the latest games and its starting to bug me with constant graphical lag and over heating issues. Ill be getting £400 for xmas to upgrade my pc and want to know what the best parts for the money would be, at the moment i have.

AMD Athlon barton 3200XP +
1 GB Corsair DDR2 Twin X memory
ABIT NF7S v2
Asus X800 XT PE
Western Digital 80 GB HDD

Thats all the parts which need upgrading really.

Thanks in advance !

I would think on that budget that core2 is out of range, but i'll have a go...

edit: no i cant do it. Are you likely to get any more money in the near future? (Decides whether to go with an old pentium on a 775 board to allow upgrade to core2, or go with AM2 to get better budget performance now)

Its not good, but I think its about the best you'll get on that budget. Put the spare money towards a hard drive later on.

edit: just seen your post. £650 is much better... brb

ok, try this. Much more future proof. Big hard drive, decent RAM and powerfull graphics. I think that PSU would be ok to go with all that. maybe someone who has similar setup can confirm...

edit: you should be able to get a decent price for selling that graphics card. Quite a lot of games have older rigs with AGP and that card is about as quick as you can get for AGP and so still fetches a pretty good price.

In my opinion that's still a nice system but I can see that it would have problems with some of the newer gaming titles. What I would do in your boots is:

1) Clean up the old system and try and sell it

or

2) Break it down into components and sell them on auction

add the funds from your sale/s to your current budget and build yourself an 'entry level' Core2 Duo system
