Finally upgrading my aging 3500+ but as I've not really taken much notice of technology recently I'm a little out of sorts now its time to upgrade :(

Anyway, I'm too tight to replace half of my components to go AM2 so Im limited to socket 939. And with that rather limiting factor the 2 'best' dual core CPU's I can find on that socket are the A64 X2 4600 or the Opteron 175. Given that choice is there one blatently better option or pretty much like for like performance wise ?

Will be some overclocking happening, but not to extremes ;)

Yuk AM2, don't go there!

anyway your probably best off with an X2 such as the 3800+ as it is quite overclockable or get your hands on a dual core Opteron as they have larger caches.

Yeah, I've found somewhere that I can get my hands on either processor that I mentioned. I'd asumed that having the extra 1mb cache would more that make up for the extra 200 Mhz of the 4600, especially as I'm sure I can get those back with a little overclocking.

But having never used an Opteron before, I just wanted to make sure that I wasnt going to get something compleatly wrong :D
