Hi,

Im looking to upgrade from:

4400 A64 dual core
2gb ddr400
512mb 1900xt

Im going to basically need the following:

CPU
Board
Mem
Gfx
Power supply?

Obviously want it to run the latest games and ive got a 24" dell monitor so if it does them at 1920x1200 that would be splendid.

Not really that well up on whats about and whats the best any more so just after some ideas if possible please.

I do a lot of photoshop work etc also so would like it to be nice and quick when dreamweaver/photoshop etc is open and doing tasks in that.

Dont really want to upgrade for a good while after this so need it to be as good as possible without me having to sell a kidney though hehe (so not interested in dual graphics cards etc, thats too much :D)

Thanks for any help, much appreciated
Ash

ive not really set one to be honest, only thing i would say is i wouldnt pay tons more for a tiny performance increase. like the difference between cpus etc. if that makes sense?

you can loose 4 GB of ram if you think 8GB is too much and get the retail q6600 if you will not overclock.

8GB is absolutly ridiculous, by the time it's used ddr2 will be obsolete.

and what res are you playing at?

if it's 1680x1050 or below that gpu will be fine, if not then I'd be tempted to get something better.

he did say he did a lot of photoshop and dreamweaver work so i thought 8 gig might be wanted

still a bit ridiculous imo, but if money is not an object then go for it.

if he's playing at 1920x1200 then he'll struggle to use much AA or AF with the 8800GT, thing is though, to go sli with a 8800gt won't work on p35, and isnt supported very well on all games, and a GTX is not worth the extra over th GT atm.

so better for him to get the GTX?

read my above post.

but if he is going to be keeping it for a while, that probly means he won't want to upgrade the cpu for a while, so penryn support won't be important, so he could get a 680i board which clock ok, and then two 8800GT's for about £350

would be looking to play the latest stuff, crysis, cod4 etc.

monitor res is 1920x1200 but i realise crysis is prob going to struggle at that?

dont have any prob with intel/amd, ati/nvidia whichever is best really.

PC is going to be used for working also so stability is a big thing so not sure on overclocking, dont really know much about it but would obviously do it if it gets better performance and the pc wont fall over :D

thanks

overclocking shouldn't cause stability issues, if you don't push it to far...

at that res, it will be possible to play crysis at very high settings just not with a 8800GT.

am i looking at the GTX then? saw they had one on here for just under £300 on pre order. dont mind paying that much for a gfx card as long as it will do the business and last me a fair while (1/2 years +) or is there something on the horizon thats going to be considerably better? I know there always is something coming out, i mean imminent.

question about memory too

is there much difference between the 6400 ddr2 and above? is ddr3 currently worth it or would i not see much real world difference. not bothered about benchmarks etc

DDR3 is not worth the extra cost atm.

and there is a new GTX coming out within the next 3 months, which will be considerably better.
