upgrade advice

hi all,
looking to upgrade my current rig (below)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 @ 3.0GHz w/ Cooler Master Hyper TX
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3
4GB Geil PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHz

starting to feel a bit sluggish and as I'm upgrading to win7 and will be needing a fresh install anyway!
was thinking of upgrading the core parts i.e. CPU, mobo and RAM and later down the line getting a better GPU
budget between £400 and £500 (absolute max)
having looked into it a little I think I can just about scrape an i7 setup within budget, but would it be worth spending more on an i5 setup and overclocking more aggressively?
any advice and spec suggestions would be most welcome

i would get the i5, have the extra money for a better GPU, when you get one.

Depends what you plan to do with your pc, that should influence your decision

currently got a Corsair HX520W, which might be a little underpowered for SLI/crossfire but otherwise pretty sound?
main and almost sole purpose for this rig is for gaming, as I have a seperate HTPC for media and the like.
