I have finally given up trying to persuade my abit Faltality FP-IN9 to overclock my Q6600 past 2.7Ghz. After scouring the internet I have come to the conclusion that the board is not really very good at getting quad cores past this speed. I thought about getting a new motehrboard, but there seems little point in spending £100 for 0.3Ghz. I have now decided it might be time for an upgrade, but I like to keep as much as my exsisting componts to begin with if possible too. I'm concious that my system is very 2007, and so I need something modern but backward compatable? Any suggestions?

My components are as follows:

Q6600 (Go) - (Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 and an Antec case ful of fans.)
Faltality FP-IN9
4Gb RAM (4 x 1Gb DDR2 Crucial Ballistix - updated versions)
2 x Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS (SLI)
2 x SATA 2 500Gb Hard disks
Creative SB xFI
750Watt PSU

Thank you!

That CPU should easily clock to 3.2Ghz with a decent board, I'd sell yours for as much as you can and use it fund a better one that is renowned for being good at overclocking. You can get some decent Gigabyte boards for £60-£70 from OcUK, minus the revenue from selling your old one and you could be on a £30 upgrade for .5Ghz increase, not a bad price if you ask me!

Having 4 x 1 gig sticks of RAM will limit any OC on any board, added to that that very few nforce boards (for SLI) were very good, only the latest incarnations which still command over a ton investment. tbh I think you should try n make do as long as possible then bite the bullet and go for a new system based on i5/5870 or NVidias new equivalent if youre avid NVidia fan. I suspect your current system is still ok for now though

thanks, I might try redgie's suggestion of getting a new board to see if I can squeeze a little more speed.

Out of interest, would I be able to get a bundle deal, ie. new MB, processor and RAM, and use my exsisting Graphics card (although not SLI) and HDs and see an improvement, and then upgrade the graphics card at a later date?

I'd get a 2nd hand clockable mobo & upgrade the GFX card myself & I would also sell the Ram & get 2x2 for ease of clocking.
