Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my kid's PC.

We have £300 max budget for ATX Motherboard, CPU + Fan, Memory (inc shipping).

(Already have a "XFX HD 6870 900MHz 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E Graphics Card" and 700w Alpine PSU that we'll keep)

Games looking to play... GTA4, GTA5 (when poss), Sims 4 etc.

Is anyone able to help?

700W Alpine PSU *shudder*

A £16 power supply..please don't inflict this travesty of a fire-risk on new components :(

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4570 3.20GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £149.99
1 x Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU) £53.99
1 x Gigabyte B85M-HD3 Intel B85 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £50.99
1 x SuperFlower Amazon 450W "80 Plus Bronze" Power Supply £39.95
Total : £304.51 (includes shipping : £8.00).

There. I've even stopped your house burning to the ground by speccing a new and much, much better power supply.

Thanks :)

Let's suppose I wanted the fire risk, what would you recommend? :D

Will a mini ATX motherboard cause any issues?

Also, any ideas on a CPU fan?

Standard intel cpu cooler will be fine if the case has half decent air flow. Buy a new PSU and use the intel cooler. Really, you dont want that thing blowing up your nice new components.

You need a new psu now not later. Your current psu is garbage. It can only deliver 456w (and that's over optimistic) on the 12v rail which is abysmal for a modern psu. Any decent psu will deliver all of it's rated wattage on the 12v rail. The psu is the single most important component in a pc and is not the place to skimp on. Everybody on here will tell you the same thing. If you can't afford to replace it now delay the upgrade until you can afford to replace it.
