I currently have an i5 [email protected] with a Gigabyte Z97X-SLI (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard. I am thinking of upgrading but wondering if it is worth waiting for Skylake. I am seeing games stating that the minimum requirements are an i7 and am worried that my system will not be able to keep up soon. I use it for gaming alone and just want to run games as high as possible at 1440 144hz. I have 1 gtx 980 at the minute and am going sli so will be upgrading power supply and a few other bits so am tempted to upgrade everything now. I was thinking about the x99s and the 5820k. I would just like to try and future proof as much as possible but don't want to waste money if not needed.

Any help appreciated.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Would you say there is no point changing that CPU and board just for gaming purposes at all? Would this last me for some time?

Sorry but I am not very tech minded shall we say lol.

The money I could save could certainly go towards a new monitor, I was looking at the Asus PG278Q ROG Swift 27" G-Sync 144Hz Gaming Widescreen LED Slim Bezel Monitor - Black/Red. Unless you could recommend anything else.

Thanks again.

Ahhh so this ddr4 doesn't really change much either then as that's what I was thinking with the x99.

My budget is £1500. That needs to include -
1000w superflower psu (I have the 750 gold green atm)
I was looking at the corsair hydro h100i gtx but they are out of stock.(I have the prolimatech atm)
Also I am wanting an extra ssd Samsung 250gb 850 EVo I was thinking.

I was informed that the 750w power supply would not be sufficient for sli but I would like your advice on that if possible.

Thanks again.

The monitor is an Iiyama Prolite 24" 1080p 60Hz so the upgrade is due.

I noticed there has been problems with that Corsair cooler also and that they have been recalled. Are they decent\/

My mouse and keyboard are just the basic coolermaster bundle I received with my pc. Speakers are very basic also I cant even remember the name lol. All very basic to be honest. Would be happy with some suggestions.

Thanks.

I have on the list already taking into account I have £1500 - £1600 max to spend -

MSI GeForce GTX 980 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 1000W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black
Corsair Hydro H100i GTX 240mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060021-WW)
Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E250B/EU)

Now monitors there are two I am torn between -

Acer Predator XB270HU 27" G-Sync IPS 144Hz Gaming Widescreen LED Monitor - Black/Red (UM.HB0EE.009)
Asus PG278Q ROG Swift 27" G-Sync 144Hz Gaming Widescreen LED Slim Bezel Monitor - Black/Red

Thanks.

Yes I have seen some reviews and the IPS panel seems to have a lot more going for it but the response time is a little worse than the swift.

Would you say I needed a new power supply for sli? I have a 750w superflower atm. Is a 1000w a must?

Thank you.

Yes I don't want to risk it so I will upgrade that.

I have been able to fit everything into my budget apart from the speakers. The mouse is on pre order so will have to wait for that unless there is another for the same price you could recommend? I have decided to go with the swift as I think it will be a massive step up from what I am using and I have never used the ips panel so will not know the difference.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Ok great.

And there is absolutely no benefit in upgrading to the i7 4790k for gaming at all?

Just with the likes of the Witcher 3 stating the minimum requirements for decent settings is an i7. I would hate to think within the year I need to upgrade anyway from my i5 4690k.

Thank you.

I hear what you are saying but I literally have this money to upgrade and that will be it for quite a long time, so if I can I would like to future proof my gaming setup and if that means upgrading to an i7 now which will last me a lot longer then so be it.

Surely the the hyper-threading will come into play with bigger titles down the line such as The Witcher 3?

I am unable to install the hardware also so I would much prefer to get everything done at once as I will be paying for labour on top. That is why I asked if it may be better to wait until the new Skylake comes out until I upgrade and then get everything done as I have heard that my motherboard will not be compatible and then there is ddr4 so that is what I was thinking with the x99, it just seems like I will have to upgrade at some point in the near future anyway, you know?

Yes I would have a psu, motherboard, cpu and ram to sell on if I went for the x99, so would make a little back.

The two options are - buy the monitor etc now and hold off for the new motherboard and cpu till early next year.

Or get the major work done now and hold off for the monitor etc.

I think the sensible option would be to wait till skylake has been released and see what happens. Maybe my cpu wont struggle and I may be worried about nothing. Some people say an i5 4690k (devils Canyon) will do for a long time for just gaming alone, then there are others that say it wont due to hyper-threading etc and there are already games being released that state an i7.

Don't suppose you know where i could get a crystal ball?

Thanks anyway.

I have a prolimatech 81 cpu cooler. I have never overclocked before. This was the Titan Tanto bundle so the only thing I have upgraded was the power supply when ordering.

This seems to be the problem with pc gaming. It comes in very handy to be able to do the work yourself.

I always thought it would be the same way of thinking "you don't have to be a mechanic to drive a car" lol.

just don't have the nerve to try myself (yet anyway).
