Hi Guys,

I am looking to upgrade my Intel I7 920 (8gb Corsair ram), video card, Psu and hard drives are all ok.

I play games but have also just started to dabble with video editing (GoPro) and need something faster.

I have been looking at the 5820k or the 4970k, which would you choose and why, also what MB and Ram would you get?

Oh and PCI express ssds, worth getting over my Samsung sad?

Thanks,

Wozza.

SSD definitely worth getting as the speed difference form a HHD is a lot.
If you mean the 4790k then this is great as it is what i have in my system. Super quick and can be overclocked easily if you want to. i couldn't find a 4970k on google so i guess you mean 4790k?

I would definitely suggest the 4790k but you may not need that much power but it is a future proof cpu. I have had no problems with mine and i can't fault it. Do check that you graphics card is a good spec though as the new games and video editing software can be demanding on system specs to get the most out of the games etc. GoPro studio works fine in my system even though it is a buggy software sometimes

worth adding that on the SSD you should just install the OS and any programmes like GoPro studios on this, leave all videos, pictures, files on a secondary HDD.

Hi Wozza. What motherboard do you have? the reason I ask is because you mention video editing which cares about core count. Head to head a hex core Xeon X5650 is around the same sort of productive speed as a 4790k.

You could literally drop one in and save a ton of money to put toward the graphics card.

Thanks for the replies and DOH, yes I mean a 4790k

I have a Gigabyte Z68X-UD7-B3, its a few years old now, so I think its time to upgrade.

From what I have read so far, I am leaning towards a 5820k as the extra cores will help when video editing and a lot of reviews rate the X99 chipset over the Z170.

Well then (for video editing) I would suggest X99 with a decent pci-e NVME SSD. Won't be cheap though.

There's nothing really wrong with Z170 over 4790K. It's just that now you may be able to put together a 4790K system for a bit less (reduced prices / etc).
