Ok, I'm looking to upgrade my core components as I've been getting the upgrade itch and I'm wanting to sell my old gear while it still has some value as well.

Current spec/gear is in my sig and I've been looking at possibly getting the new Skylake 6700k but as there seem to be differing views I thought I'd ask and see what folk think for my specific requirements.

Proposed new gear:
Skylake 6700k
Asus Maximus VIII Hero Intel Z170
Corsair Hydro H110i GT 280mm

RAM I haven't got a clue about any more, there's too many choices so I'm looking for recommendations on that as well but I'm planning to get 16gb, not sure if dual channel is still a thing or not but happy to see what folk think.

I mainly use the rig for gaming, usually new AAA releases, Arma 3, MMO's and running a single gpu and don't plan to SLI ever (haven't done so since Voodoo era). I don't do any video editing but have been thinking of possibly starting some streaming to see what happens but haven't made my mind up yet as it's extremely saturated nowadays.

Hope this is enough info on what I'm wanting to do but if not please ask and I'll try to answer quickly.

You'll see about a 15% increase in performance maybe a little more. GPU brings more FPS. Newer tech is always better, but only if you can afford it. Skylake runs very cool and overclocks like a boss.

Try going for a 4790K if you must upgrade and you will save a decent amount of cash and probably get faster speeds than a 6700K. AFAIK the 6700K's get around the same overclocks as the 4790K's. For gaming you won't notice much difference moving from a 2500K @ 4.5GHz to a 6700K/4790K anyway.

If you go for a 6700K the memory speed is critical. You have to get DDR4 faster than 2400MHz to match or beat A 4790k at the same clock speed.

Theres no point in changing anything really. The only worthwhile upgrade would be a 980ti. But that might be overkill for you. You will not see any real-world difference going from SB to Skylake in games.

Right now the only reason to upgrade your CPU would be if your doing very CPU intensive tasks (non-gaming), but then your much better off with a Haswell-E or Xeon anyway.

Upgrading to Skylake is only going to benefit you in terms of lower system TDP / less fans / lower noise level. Not for any other reason.
