Thinking of upgrading from my hd7850, I only play games at 1080p so is there any point in upgrading?

Was looking at the R9 390 powercolour that's on offer but think it might be a bit overkill.

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

No, its not overkill grunt wise. As in the performance from the GPU but the memory it has which is 8gb is slightly overkill for 1080p. Not so much for bigger resolutions as that's more a comfortable size then upto 4k.

the 390 is quite a nice card for 1080 and should play pretty much all games at their high end quality with very good frame rates. (not talking max though as in max AA and all the bells and whistles)

What games do you play? And what games do you plan on getting?
What's your monitors refresh rate? 60Hz or higher? If it's 60 then you should be hitting your max refresh rate in most games on their highest settings.

390x isn't worth it when it comes to price/performance.

Only thing better than a 390 is a 980/980Ti/Titan X from nVidia and

390X/Fury/Fury X from AMD Also nano is about the same performance or marginally better than a 390? But all these cards cost more than the 390.

So id go with the 390 mate if your budget stretches to that.

Edit -

Just noticed your CPU. Out of interest what is that currently running at Ghz wise? Is it over clocked?

Hi,

My cpu runs at stock, no oc.

I play mostly driving games, sports and have been playing elite dangerous. Monitor does 60mhz.

I've saved up about £200 but could stretch to the 230 asking price.

230 is perfect for that 390. It would match your system well.
