Hey,

I bought a PC in 2011 which I'm looking to upgrade, and was hoping for your advice. These are the current specs:

CoolerMaster HAF 912 Mid-Tower
Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz (Overclocked to 4.5)
ThermalTake Frio Cooling Fan
4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600mhz
Asus P8P67 Motherboard
750 Watt PSU
GeForce GTX570 1280MB

I was thinking of swapping my RAM for 2x4GB HyperX Fury DDR3 1600mhz, and upgrading the GPU to a GTX 970. From what I've read, the i5 2500k shouldn't be a bottleneck and I appear to have enough wattage in my PSU.

Do you think this upgrade is worth it, or am I better off selling the whole thing off and investing in a new rig?

Would you recommend the GTX 970 over other cards?

Thanks in advance,

Will

The ram swap sounds good, now is the worst time to buy a GPU unless you are desperate. New GPU's will be released in the next 2 weeks. What resolution will you be gaming at?

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

I agree about the gpu. With new cards coming over the next couple of weeks with more to follow over the next few months it's not a good time to buy current gen cards. It is a good time to pick them up second hand though as people will be wanting to get rid of theirs before the new cards arive.

Same speed ram but £4 cheaper.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £30.65
(includes shipping: £4.66)

Thank you guys for the prompt feedback and links. And the welcome. :)

I hadn't realized the Pascal cards were coming out May 6th. Makes a lot of sense to wait. Given I game at either 2560*1080 or 1920*1080, do you recommend the 970 at the reduced price? There was that whole debacle about the 3.5GB, makes me wonder if 980 is worth the extra price.

Normally how long does one have to wait for the 9xx series cards to drop?

I'm also assuming that with the GPU upgrade I'll be good for a few years as far as mobo and CPU are concerned?

Edit: the 1070 is going to retail at £270 in the UK. Considering the large performance boost, this is quite appealing!

Sadly I can't see the 1070 hitting £270. Looking at thr ridiculous price of the 1080, which is not even the top end card, I expect the 1070 to be in the £450 area. The 1060 may be around £270 and it certainly looks to be interesting card as well. Saying that, if the 1070 does come in at £270 I will snap one up right away.

I think I would want more than a 970 for 2560x1080. My 780 is pretty close to 970 performance and I have seen it start to struggle when maxxing games out at 1920x1200. Certainly don't buy one at current prices. Wait and see if they drop.
