Upgrade advice

Currently running an old i7 8700k and 1080ti. I only want to spend about £300-350 - mainly to get a bit more FPS on Tarkov @ 1440p

I can see Ryzen 5800X for around £185/190 which seems like a decent price and could perhaps grab a MOBO for £110.

Or do I chance a used 3070ti or other graphics card? I assume the graphics card will give a better gaming performance increase?

There's no sense in jumping from one dead socket to another so given the choice, I'd be looking at a GFX upgrade. The 3070ti only has 8GB VRAM & is barely any faster than the 3070. If you can stretch your budget a bit more, you can get a 2nd hand 3080 for between £350-£400.

I know it's a last gen socket but what is the chance of getting an AM5 CPU for £190 that will compete with an AM4 any time soon? I'm not really bothered about being on the latest stuff as you can see I've run the 8700k for god knows how many years... but yea I think a graphics card update give me more for my money.

If you're prepared to switch to AM5 and want something 'affordable', I'd take a look at 7500F bundles *, since that's usually the best priced AM5 CPU you can get. I definitely would not jump from 1151v2 to AM4.

You can get the Ryzen 7600 for £190 (comes with a cooler too) and while there are circumstances the top gaming CPU on AM4 beats it (5800X3D), overall their gaming performance is similar enough.

About the graphics card: I haven't seen benchmarks for Tarkov specifically, but I'd imagine you're better off getting the graphics card, since the 1080 Ti is definitely falling behind decent playability at 1440p in newer games. I would be looking beyond your budget though, to a 7800 XT or 4070 Super. According to TPU's database, they're 79% and 94% faster than the 1080 Ti, while a 3070 Ti is only 46% and has less VRAM than your current card, which given your resolution seems like a bad idea.

Yep, I went from a 5800X3D to a 7500F, then to a 7600 & I've not noticed a performance hit from the reduction in core/thread count as yet. I've only really been playing Starfield & the Dead Space remake though & no doubt if I fired up something like CP2077 then it might be a different story!

A second vote here for the 7600, very good chip for the money with lots of upgrade potential on AM5.

Go for 7600 non X - less heat and almost the same performance
