Hi All

Can I get some advise on the best CPU to go for at the moment?

I would like to keep my MOBO and just upgrade my CPU.

Main PC use is browsing/gaming (mainly COD warzone at the moment).

My current specs:

1440p 144hz monitor

ROG STRIX B350-F GAMING

AMD Ryzen 1600 @ 3.8

TeamGroup 16gb ram
3070TI FE

many thanks!

5600 or 5700x, whats the budget?
I think I paid roughly £180 for the 1600 at the time a few years back so let's say a budget of £200 max.

I don't have any upgrade plans in the near future (maybe in 2 years at least)

Forgot to mention that I use a 1440p 144hz monitor (updated main post).

Thanks

5700x would be the best choice for 2 years plus, the extra threads should keep it relevant for longer.

I'm assuming there is a bios for the B350-F that supports the 5x00 chips?
Not on the official CPU support, seems to be limited to the 3000 series: https://rog.asus.com/uk/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b350-f-gaming-model/helpdesk_cpu

However, there is a couple beta BIOSes based on the latest AGESA, and a quick google shows someone did get a 5600X to work with it, so I assume the 1.2.0.7 one should at least work with the 5700X.

EDIT: Asus has a Reddit post showing 5600 and 5700X will work on all B350 boards with AGESA 1.2.0.6 onwards: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/tntsuw/asus_announces_uefi_bios_support_agesa_1206b_for/

If you're upgrading in a few years I'd just go for the 5600, otherwise the 5700X. If you have an AF model 1600 then I'd consider waiting until AM5, either to buy one, or to get a discounted AM4 CPU. You could also go second hand at that point, as no doubt a lot of people will be ditching them to switch to AM5.

The Ryzen 7 5700X would be better for longevity so if you can find for under £250 that would be keep you set for a while, especially since you have an RTX3070TI. You could sell your Ryzen 5 1600 online or to CEX to reduce the cost of the Ryzen 7 5700X. If you just want a relatively cheap upgrade then a Ryzen 5 5600 would also be a solid choice.

Hardware Unboxed did some tests with your motherboard and it had no issues with a 5800X3D so it will be fine with either the 5600 or 5700X.

You just need to ensure that your BIOS is up to date and remember to be carful when removing your CPU cooler so you don't pull the 1600 out of the socket and damage the pins.

I bought a 5700x recently for an mATX system and I’m blown away by it to be honest. 13500 multi core r23, 1532 single, it never once passed 50c with a deep cool AK620. I’ve got it setup so that it’s virtually silent in operation. I haven’t tweaked it or anything, just out of the box. Great CPU!

Great advice on removal. I fell foul of this when changing a cooler on an old system with a 1600 in it. I was very lucky and got away with it....just. Three bent pins.

use it to heat the CPU up and soften the paste. Never remove a cooler from a CPU with cold paste.

Totally my fault. Was half asleep when I did it and just pulled at the cooler. Should twist it gently to break the seal, or as you say power it up if possible to heat the paste up.

If you can stretch to a 5700X than that would be the best option and would give you a smoother warzone experience over just a 6 core CPU. It would also age better as you plan to keep the system for a while yet.

5600 or 5600X would be massive upgrade. You are likely to gain 30fps with the minimums easily.

If you want a little future proofing then going for the higher core counts (as other people have suggested) will help.

If you can sell the 1600 and add to the £200 budget then 5700x.
If the £200 already includes sale of 1600 then 5600.

Should see big gains given you already have a good GPU.
Do keep in mind the B350 chipset will hold you back a little bit, no PCI-E 4, VRMs not as good, no PBO2 etc. Not major problems but just keep in mind in case you don't quite hit the performance numbers you see from benches with the same CPUs on x570 etc.

If you can wait until towards the end of the year, a 5800X3D will probably be well within your price range second hand, as people sell up and move to Zen4/AM5.
