hello all i,m new on here and wondered if you guys could point me in the right direction? i was considering upgrading my graphics card/s and maybe cpu? my current specs are;; i7 920@ 2.66- asus p6t v2 deluxe- gtx 285 sli- corsair hx1000- 6gb corsair ram xms3 1333?. was considering the gtx580 route, also the gtx480 ! but i am stumped as to what to do. i would be gratefull if anyone can advise me what to do..i think my mobo allows nvidea and ati? my pc seems to run stuff really well, i play games only so thats the most important thing!;) i play at a 1920x1080 res..thanks all;)

I wouldn't upgrade the CPU just overclock it a bit myself. As far as the GPU depends on what you are willing to spend especially if you want SLI again or just one card that will run anything.

I fail to see what is wrong with your existing system. My advise would be to keep the CPU as its more then powerful enough. Now do some benchmark research, there are a lot of sites out there that will give you marks for Single super high spec cards vs lower spec cards in SLi at lower prices.

thanks for replys.;). would a single gtx580 stamp on my 285's? cant seem to find any comparisons regards the 285 sli and a gtx580 etc..cheers

No way do you need to upgrade that CPU! I would definitely overclock it though as it's so easy to do and will give you a fair amount of extra performance. Video card wise, the 580 is the fastest single GPU card on the market. It should be a bit quicker than 285 SLI.

CPU is fine mate just upgrade the GPU, a 480/570 or a 580 maybe even in sli would be a nice upgrade though. The HX 1000 will support any of them cards.

If you have a good cooler, overclock the cpu, an i7 920 will last for quite a while for gaming. Stick in a card such as the 580 and youll be sorted.

@ IvanDodskey. Is the GTX590 not the most powerful card now from nvidia? I've got the same system as the op mantaman except using 2x gtx280's. Wouldn't mind giving my system a kick up the bum! Maybe overclock the chip too :)

The 590 is nvidias overall most powerful card, but it's a dual card. The 580 is the highest ranked single gpu in nv's current lineup.

You more than likely won't need to upgrade the cpu for at least about four years. Are your 285's struggling? If they are, chuck in a couple of these :

This is a quick comparison between your 285's and a 480 (580 not available for comparison with 285 sli).

I expect the 480 to provide smoother frames rates, with better minimum and averages as well (though it won't deliver as high maximums in most situations). There really is no point considering a 580 when an overclocked 480 will equal, if not be slightly faster.

great info guys.. a couple of those 480's are only slightly dearer than a 580 aswell.
think i might go the 480 route. there doesnt seem to be much space between my 285's,so will have to be careful which cards i choose, cooler wise! the psu is below the mobo and it blocks the bottom slot..will the 480 be same size as a 285? thanks very much again for everyones input

The p6t dlx v2 is one of the better boards for pcie spacing.

My own setup with sli'd reference cooled 470's.

thanks for the input again guys..i,m still fannying about making my mind up!! i fancy gtx 480 sli, but reviews are saying they run lava hot!. on the other hand i can only afford one gtx 580 at the mo. will a 580 run modern games at 1920x1080 max settings? i could then add a second in a few months time..also if a run a 580 with one of my gtx285's for physics what sort of results would that yield? i could jump to ati but dont know what they have to offer? new games coming like= battlefield 3- dirt 3- make me think i,m gonna need sli/crossfire? thanks
