hi all

im looking to upgrade this old pc for my son and im wondering my limits

ive used cpuid to find out some info

motherboard is a MCP73VT-PM

at the minute it has it has a intel 775 socket celeron e1200 1.8 ghz cpu on the spec sheet it says it can take celeron and duo 2 but doesnt say anything about p4 cpu`s could it take them? and how far can you go with it do you just have to keep to socket 775.

it has pci-e and it has a nvidia 7200 graphics card can i go as high as i want or is there a limit on the board i was looking at 9800gt?

really i want to go as high as i can with out spending too much he only really plays flash games and a bit of mine craft only reason i want to upgrade a bit is because minecraft stutters abit

Would replacing the board and buying an i3 not be the best option? That way you will be giving the system some longevity. Also you didn't say what your budget is.

if i replace the board and that it would mean new everything and i dont want to spend that as he is a console monster.

its just so he can go ont net in his room facebook and stuff.

no one in my house touches my pc as they break EVERYTHING so they are band.

i was only looking to spend 50-60 quid

if i build a new system next year hell get this one so i can try and move him into the world of pc gaming as the graphics on the consoles are crap

You are close to qualifying for free P&P, next month maybe a little longer.

If the rig he has uses sata drives you could consider this perhaps

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte F2A85XM-D3H AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 micro ATX Motherboard £58.99
1 x AMD A6-5400K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Dual Core Processor (AD540KOKHJBOX) £49.99
1 x Patriot Intel Extreme Masters 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (PVI38G213C1K) £39.95
Total : £148.93 (includes shipping : FREE).

Your rig should be more than fine for quite some time. This trinity setup is gaming capable, 3 year warranty on the mobo and CPU, RAM is lifetime warranty.

I've used faster RAM which will help the IGP, plenty of RAM to lend to the IGP too. The quadcore A10 isn't much more and has a better IGP. From what you said he will use it for this would fit the bill quite nicely. I'm sure you are aware of the free to play games, the star wars MMO has taken on a free to play option
