Upgrade and wait on a GPU?

Having not been impressed with the 5080 reviews and put off by the pricing on the 5090, I have so far held off on upgrading my pc.

I've decided to go ahead and upgrade now, but I'm unsure whether to bite the bullet and pay for a 5080, or wait and see if 4090/5080/5090 gets any more reasonable and run the 3090 in a new set up for a while.

I have put together a spec of:

I want a big case and to maximise air cooling as my office gets very warm and I don't want to have to run the AC every time I game just to keep the pc cool.

Does the build make sense? The CPU is a bit overkill to be honest, so I could drop that to the 9800X3D, but for now I have it included. Would you just fork out for a 5080 to go with it or hold off?

Thanks @mickyflinn

I do a very limited amount of video editing, not enough to really warrant anything beyond the 9800x3d. Would the 9950X3D make very little difference for gaming?

I was thinking of going all out on the mobo and certainly the cooling. I want it to run as cool, and quiet, as possible without going down the wc route.

Thanks @Tetras I feel like waiting to snap up a better priced 4090 or for the 5080 to reduce is the play.

To be honest, just a very good mobo to go with which ever cpu I get. Would a X670 board make more sense if going the 9800x3d route?

Would this future proof me for a 4090/5080?

Will need to buy some additional fans too.

Thank you for the advice @Gray2233 appreciate you offering those alternatives. I had assumed I would need a minimum 1200w but it appears that would only be necessary for the 5090. As I doubt I will go beyond the 5080, at least until future series, the 1000w offerings make more sense!

Would just get a 9070XT, you'll get around 85% of the 5080 performance for 50% of the price then upgrade again next gen when hopefully a node jump will bring better uplifts.

A 5080 only really makes sense if you can get the FE.

Would that require me to change any of my build? I've never run an AMD gpu before!

The 4090 is faster but used worries me with lack of warranty , what are they going for used ?

Review.

9070xt is another option which is 5% slower on average than the 5070 ti so mite be worth checking out comparison.

What resolution and game types you play ?

Currently more than new 5080s and agree on the lack of warranty.

Tend to game on my AW3225QF which is native 3840 x 2160. A mix of FPS and strategy games (cod/fortnite to total war/civ). No sims.

Actually, you only really need a good 1000W unit for a 5090:

Companies tend to overspec on the basis many people buy weaker PSU's.

Frankly, were it me I'd spend £130-150 on something like a 1000W Superflower Leadex III 3.1.

Thanks @Gray2233 makes sense to save a bit more there too then. Much appreciated.

5080 then imo even though prices are inflated but we've saved you a bundle to offset cost

Just a heads up that on first boot on AM5 it can take up to 15mins for anything to show on screen and may reboot a few times as the motherboard is training the memory so be patient.

Do some research and check benchmarks before you make your final decision.

In off to bed

Enjoy.

Thanks for all your advice @mickyflinn much appreciated.

So I think I have settled on the following:

1 X Arctic Liquid Freezer III ARGB High Performance CPU Water Cooler - 360mm - £89.99

1 X Antec HCG 1000 Pro Platinum 1000W ATX3.1 Full modular Power Supply - £189.95
SKU

1 X Asus GeForce RTX 5080 TUF Gaming OC 16GB GDDR7 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £1,499.99
SKU
: GRA-ASU-03930

Grand Total: £2,883.89

Seem to be quite a few builds pairing that card with the CPU with good results.

I would then only need to transfer my two SSDs (Samsung 860 QVOs) from my existing build to the new one. I may well get a new SSD though as space is limited on those two. Should I stick with something like a 870 QVO or go for a 980 Pro?

Thanks @mickyflinn it must have gone out of stock as I'm sure it was in stock when I posted!

Having read a few more threads and reviews, I think I might even ditch the 5080 and see how the 3090 performs for now in that new build. Not sure the price justifies the level of performance and to be fair, nothing I play at the moment struggles and the CPU upgrade will help.

I think one of the reasons the 9070 / 9070 XT have been so popular is that they're a more reasonable price for a decent upgrade from older cards like e.g. a 3060 Ti, but when you get to the 3090, there's really nothing out there because the performance gain gen on gen has been very poor in the midrange since the 1000 series.

Certainly seems like waiting for prices to drop, or more likely, next gen makes sense. Even my 'man maths' can't justify the 5090!

So I went ahead and ordered the new build yesterday and it arrived today (which I wasn't expecting).

Spent ages putting it together, partly due to issues with mounting the AIO. I have been installing programmes and setting up the OS. I thought I would quickly run Warzone and see how temps are and immediately have two issues:

  1. CPU temps immediately jumped to 81 degrees when it loaded. Had hit 70 when installing games in Steam but this just spiked it. Is that going to be an issue with the AIO mounting or thermal paste application? All fans are working and I didn't mess with any of the configurations. Everything is at stock.
  2. Less of an issue, but the GPU temp is not changing on the case control panel (sticks at 35 degrees but MSI Afterburner had it jump to 45 on loading).
I haven't run any stress tests yet but all reviews seemed to suggest I shouldn't be seeing above 70 on temps?

Edit - the fan on the actual casing of the cooler does not appear to be spinning. I have the single cable plugged into the CPU-FAN1 on the mobo and on HWiNFO the fan is idling at less than 1000 RPM. Not sure if this suggest it is not connected correctly or if I need to change any settings? I've tried tightening the bracket but it is well connected.
