Upgrade bug... *sigh*

Ok, so I currently have:

X2 4400+
2GB Geil RAM (4 * 512Mb)
X1800XT
Hiper 580W

I was planning on upgrading to the R600 when it comes out, but a few questions have arisen:

1) Is my PSU likely to be OK? Looking (briefly) at the specs it looks like it might be worth upgrading to a higher-rated model (and the fact my current one is a ticking time bomb!)

2) Is there really such a great performance boost between an X2 4400+ and a E6300/6600? Is it worth me selling my current CPU + RAM? (Mobo will be used for a friend's rig).

3) I'm trying to make it future proof so that it can last the next few years. I'm not interested in upgrading the CPU just to get a better 3DMark score, I just want to play the next-gen of games (Quake Wars, Crysis etc) without my CPU being the limiting factor. Is it really gonna hold back the R600?

Any help whatsoever is appreciated. Am I being an upgrade numpty?

Honestly, nobody really knows until the card is released. There are some supposed benchmarks floating around but you'd need a bucket of salt to take those with...
Have you clocked that 4400 at all? If not then definately do! And go for the max you can get! C2D is much better at the moment but a high clocked AMD is no slouch, regardless of what some people on these forums would have you believe...

It was always my understanding that DX10 in it's full was meant to take load of the CPU but I really am not sure anymore.
What you have right now is still a really good seup, I'd say you'd be best to hold on until R600 is released, which I believe is in the next month or so.

Things change all the time but sometimes it really is a good idea to wait and see.

Well here's the advantages as i see it....

1) You get a better CPU, faster and longer lasting future wise.
2) You'll have new memory and the option to upgrade to over 2 gigs (if you buy 2x1gb sticks of course), which is going to become a requirement for the likes of Vista with next gen games, though not yet, you currently do not have that option since all ram slots are taken. 2gb is easily enough now but you have no options to increase it if the need arises.
3) The sooner you sell the more you'll make from your parts.
4) The sooner you replace that PSU the less likely it is to fail and have the possibility of taking other parts.

Its up to you though, do you honestly need it now?...

The only thing that would make me sell now is if i wanted a bigger return on my parts.

At the same time, you can never guarantee how future proof any PC will be, heck who knows, in a year from now there could be a massive breakthrough and technology takes another turn. Granted though, the Core2Duo setup will give you longer life and give you more upgrade options, as mentioned with the ram etc.....
