Upgrade Bug - I’m tearing my hair out over choices and really don’t know what to do!

Currently I have a reference 290p which I use on my 1440p PLS Asus. I’d like a little more GPU grunt and considering the below options but genuinely don’t know which one to do
1. Another 290p - £140 ish but will be hot
2. Sell 290p and get 2x970 – due to their lower heat & power consumption
3. Sell 290p and get a 980 (with scope for 2 in the future)
4. Do nothing and wait for 3xx series – timeline? Not sure I can wait…

PSU is fine, running a Parvum S2 with potential to move to the Phanteks Evolv if my Mrs doesn’t oppose the change…..again!

So, what would you suggest?

TBF what do you use the rig for? and at what res?
I have a second 290x sitting on my desk waiting for a bigger PSU but i cant bring myself to spend £140 on a PSU when the one 290x i have max's out all the games i play

Edit yep i see your at 1440, a second would been nice for extra FPS, i just run my monitor at 1080 when gaming

Ref 290x?

it is indeed

in reply to your last post about the problem you have had, i have to say i would not buy a used 290/x, there is just too many that have been hammered in some way.

you may be best to wait for the 300's then grap ever a cheap 300 or a cheap used card that been offloaded to upgrade by other users

True but the mining boom is over and 99% of the cards have been sold or returned due to clocking/stability issues.

I bought my 290p from AMDMatt and while I've had a few issues (mainly due to undervolting experiments) I can't really complain on it's performance. At 1080p it was mint but 1440p needs a little more. I've managed to create a custom profile via AMD Overdrive / MSI AB and couldn't be happier!

Would you consider selling the 290x?

Since you describe the upgrade bug, you need to honestly ask yourself if you'll be disappointed when the 390 comes along. It might be announced soon but should be released in Q2. The 390x is likely to be a big improvement over anything (single core) currently available. If you buy now and know that you'll be disappointed when the better cards arrive you need to hold off.

I'm assuming you'll only get one opportunity to get your plans past the other half so may as well wait and see what comes!

Ahh yes, a man making some kind of understandable sense :D Of course I would be disappointed ;)

Q2 will be after March, maybe I could wait a little while longer - could always quench my bug with a new Case........maybe be the Phanteks Evolv.......!

295x2

Can't see a 390x beating it although you won't have to worry about scaling, heat or power I guess.

I had thought about that and was very very close to taking one of Matts yesterday!
