Could I just get a sanity check on components please? Intended use Gaming + general, upgrading from my now aging AMD 4400 components. I've already got: ATI 4870 1GB card + had to replace PSU some time ago with an Enermax Modu 82+ 625W Modular ATX2.3. Antec P180 case, filled with 120mm fans, kept quiet with Akasa fan controller :)

I've ditched the i7 route, too expensive, future socket upgrade limitation, and looks like won't really give me much more advantage gaming-wise. Please feel free to disagree, especially on the future proofing point!

I'm thinking of:

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £149.99 inc VAT

Asus M4A78T-E AMD 790GX (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £98.99 inc VAT

Corsair Dominator XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600C9D Twin3X (TW3X4G1600C9D) £72.99 inc VAT

Thermalright Ultra-120A Extreme CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3) £34.99 inc VAT

Pioneer DVR-217FBK 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer LabelFlash ReWriter (Black) - OEM £17.99 inc VAT (to keep things tidy with SATA ditching IDE cabling)

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g) £6.89 inc VAT

Total £381.85

Does this look OK or should I consider an Intel Quad bundle with DDR2? @ £299.99 ?

From what Ive read, 790GX and 790fx mobos overclock better than 790X chipsets. The ASUS is cheaper, has onboard graphics for when your GPU has gone kaput but you still wanna keep watching movies etc on your PC while waitin for a GPU, or even for troubleshooting your GPU and IMO looks better than the Gigabyte too.
