Upgrade Compatibility Check

Afternoon,

Decided to upgrade my CPU, and therefore the motherboard and RAM that will have to come with it. I've done some research and found some decent components that I'm happy with but would appreciate if anyone could offer any advice or insight into my choices and whether it's compatible with the rest of my PC.

Firstly, my current set-up:

  • - i5 2500k @ 3.5ghz
    - ASUS P8H67-M PRO
    - GeForce GTX 970 (most recent upgrade)
    - kingston ddr3 ram
    - CM hyper 212 evo cooler
    - BeQuiet Pure Power L7 530W '80 Plus' Power Supply
    - HDD & SSD (western digital 500gb & samsung 850 evo 250gb)
    - Zalman z9 plus Case

And the new parts I'm currently thinking of purchasing:

- Intel Core i5 6600K

- Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Motherboard

- Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit

The upgrade comes to around £380 and my biggest worries with upgrading come down to whether I can get better bang for my buck, if my case is big enough and if my PSU is also good enough.

Again, would appreciate any help or advice regarding my upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

There are two 6600k and board bundles listed in this link, saves money.

Case and psu are fine.

The 6600K and gaming K3 bundle also give cash back - https://toptechcashback.com/gb/en/pages/cpumb/qualifying

Thanks for the response.

Do you think the bundles are decent even if I have the money to fork out for separate boards and CPU? I mean, if there's not going to be any noticeable difference then I may as well go for the bundle and save myself but with the money available now is it worth going separate for the better components?

That cash back makes the cheaper K3 bundle board excellent value if you remember to actually do the cash back. And I was supprised to see an M.2 slot.

Vs the £13 more expensive board, the main difference is that it can't do SLI. And at 16/4 quite frankly it can't do crossfire either. The current consensus on crossfire is that its a mugs game anyway [I've give up on it twice over the last 4 years]. SLI opinion varies. Some still rate it.

No one knows if DX12 is going to give Crossfire/SLI a whole new burst of life over the next 2 years.
