So , after much deliberation and borrowing a bit of cash from (you guessed it, the Mrs)..

I have gone from

AMD FX 8120
Gigabyte GA 990FX
16G DDR3 1600mhz
GTX 960 OC.....

To.....

i5 4690k
MSI Z97 gaming 5
16g DDR3 1600mhz
MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G.

Not as high as i wanted as not enough cash.....
But am i glad i went Intel ?

Oh you bet!!!
Will NEVER go back again.
My pc has a new lease of life, and i am gaming at the MAX on ALL of my games.

Now i am happy :)

Thankyou for all advice on here from all who commented.

Oh, what i will ask is this.....

I know my board is not a new model, but it's still a very good board imo...
What other i5/i7 cpu's can i upgrade to- that will be worth it in the future?

You can upgrade to an i7 4790K or 4770K. The 4790K is the faster CPU you can use. The i5 4690K is the fastest i5 on LGA1150.

The 4690K should OC well, so slap a decent cooler on it and you should be able to get 4.2-4.4GHz.

If you bought that lot new then why didn't you go skylake/Z170 which is newer? The 6600k is only a fiver more than a 4690k and motherboards are a similar price to Z97.

Unfortunately, the only item new that i could afford was the gpu.
The rest i bought 2nd hand from a friend. So that's the reason

i7-4790K is your only real upgrade option with that board. Would give you a boost in apps and games that can utilise the extra threads, but probably not enough to justify the upgrade cost unless you find one going nice and cheap second hand.
