Hello,
I currently run a 3700X + 5700xt on an MSI x570-A pro, gaming and doing office work at 4K120Hz. I had planned to get a 5800x3d and a 7900xt next month, and to put my old CPU and GPU in my son's B350 computer, which is currently running a 2400g on integrated graphics. However, after a day of installing and rolling back BIOS I have found that I cannot get the x570-A pro to boot windows or the windows installation media with any of the recent BIOS versions that will support the 5800x3d, so it appears that a new motherboard would be needed at which point I may as well just hand him the entire machine.
My son has been waiting for a promised GPU upgrade for about two years, as he now plays COD and Dying Light and the poor old 2400g, while amazing value during the previous GPU drought in early 2018, is really only able to do Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnight, which he was into when I built it. I am kicking myself for not buying a 6800xt a month or two ago when they were about A$150 cheaper than they are now. It pains me to pay 20% more having waited an extra two months. The 6900XT is almost unobtainable now here. I am also not keen on just buying him an RX6600, as I would rather improve the household's max spec and hand down my existing GPU. We are a family of two adults and four children so between work and gaming there is already a lot of bickering over use of the good computer.
I can't decide whether to just get a 7900xt, accepting that sometimes it will be CPU bottlenecked even at 4K, or wait for the Zen 4 3D chips next year and build a new system with a 7900xtx.
I could put aside the money but I hate throwing away anything that works and don't want to set a bad example to the kids of constantly buying the latest toys.
