Upgrade? CPU? i9?

My current system -

i7 4770k @ 4.5Ghz
16Gb Ram
1080Ti

The CPU is certainly starting to struggle on some games like Planet Coaster, AC Origins, The Universim, X4 Foundations etc.

Is it worth upgrading the CPU, motherboard, Ram? Wait? What kind of options are there currently? Budget irrelevant, but would still like decent bang to buck.

Oh, and I can't be faffed with overclocking anymore, but do have space for a triple radiator. So either a strong stock CPU I guess or one pre-overclocked by OcUK?

The 9700k seems like a popular choice.

Was thinking of something like this...

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £741.44 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Would I be better off with an i9? or are the gains marginal? CPU cooling options? Stock? Whats a good cooler?

Very helpful, thanks :)

Just need to ponder this now.

I also realised that I might need a windows 10 usb. I guess I’ve always installed and upgraded from an old copy, but have no dvd drive anymore.

Edit: I guess I just need to make a bootable usb. I am so rusty! I must have one somewhere.

have a look for

sabrent rocket 1tb nvme = £105 and is NVMe 3.0 and a lot better then the samsung drive for the same price

9700k- £357
Z390 Gaming X - £132.95
3600hz Corsair - £76
Rocket 1tb - £106

total = 671.85 and then £30 odd for cooler and £700 all in

other option is 3700x + b450 msi max + 3200hz ram + rocket and cooler above :) would work out about £50 cheaper odd

This was a really helpful post. Thanks @orbitalwalsh

I'm going to take the plunge. Just need to make a Windows 10 boot USB and sort out all my HDDs and SSDs.

Just need to think about selling all the old stuff then (and finding the boxes!).

Being a bit slow and just realising - can I put my H100i back on there? If the 4770k is socket 1150 and the 9770k is 1151 then the mounting requirement should be the same?

And we’re up and running :) (after it not posting and then me realising I hadn’t plugged in the motherboard power to the psu). Weird not hearing any hdd activity!

I’m refraining from overclocking currently. Enjoying the peace and lack of extra heat in the room. Everything is working as intended now. I am very happy :)

I can tell you that game likes cores. Performance fixes with 2.6Beta4, allow the game to stretch to 10 cores (cores not threads) pushing them to 70-80% easily on my 3900X and more perf improvements to come as currently the game supports 16 core CPUs.

It’s so so much smoother on my new 9770k system than my 4770k (not hugely surprising). I can now physically go into sectors with my few hundred station complexes no problem at all. All ready for the new split systems and in the meantime 2.6 mechanics :)
