Upgrade CPU or GPU?

Hi all,

I’m getting an upgrade itch. I currently have a 7900x3d CPU and an RTX 4070ti super GPU all running happily on a B650E motherboard. I use the PC for 40% 4K video editing (DaVinci Resolve) and 40% for 2k/4k gaming.

Should I upgrade my cpu to a 9900/9950x3d or should I upgrade my GPU to RTX 5080?

Sure… the GPU upgrade is more costly, however new games are harder to get acceptable FPS particularly at 4K however I’m a bit worried the 5 series RTX cards aren’t that much of a a upgrade

The 9 series CPUs dive a nice bump in performance which also benefit video editing.

Decisions decisions… (maybe the other option is compelling… wait until the new hardware comes out and see how they perform?)

Unless you're having serious performance issues (which I'd doubt based on those specs!) but you are still keen on spending on PC upgrades, I'd look at something else, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, desk, chair etc that actually impact your interaction with your system.

Great shout - as already said, I’ll upgrade my 2k monitor to a larger 4K one (gaming on the OLED TV).

As always (even though I don’t come here very often these days) I can rely on you guys to give great advice!

Do you have a 4k monitor?

Your specs are good enough tbh, not gonna see much improvement unless you spend a lot on a 5090

yeah agree with others here, not worth the upgrade to 5080 tbh as its not MUCH faster than your 4070ti going by the leaks but to answer the question, upgrading graphics card will give you much larger performance upgrade in games anyway than upgrading your CPU in this instance anyway. Maybe wait for a 5080Ti or something like it, its quite obvious that Nvidia will release something along the lines of this as there is a big performance gap between the 5080 and 5090.

The 4070ti Super has the same amount of vram as the 5080.

The new 5080 is barely faster than the 4080s, it's actually embarrassing. There's zero point in anything shy of a 5090 for anyone on a a 4070tis.

Yeah do some better quality of life improvements. Fancy monitor or a fancy sound system...
A new computer desk /kb /mouse /mouse pad
Or put the cash into your car or a savings account or Whatever.

It seems the latest gen of nvidia cards are a big joke if you look at price vs performance.

I've heard that this 5080 should really have been the 5070.

When looking at the product stack and its ratio for hardware, it absolutely should have been a 5070 or even 5060ti.

There's no room for core improvement either, and it overclocks very well with some iterations. Fully expect the 5080S if it ever surfaces to be an overclocked 5080 rather than legitimate hardware improvements with core counts etc.

Nvidia are actually limiting overclocking on the bios and driver level with the 5000 series, the cards have a lot more oompf than they're letting on from what I've seen. That's grand if you're into OC'ing, I'm a 25 + year old fan and hardware nut that loved that stuff, but I just can't be buggered with it anymore. They're trying to draw in a new generation of OC'ers after killing the last imo, I don't think it's going to work out.

One example, and while I'm iffy on his breakdowns I'm not adverse to them either.
