upgrade dilemma

After deciding not to upgrade my S939 platform for a while and spend the money on a 24" monitor , then upgrade my x1950xt to one of the 8800gt's after xmas.
all was going to plan , found the monitor that i want, but not i am stuck with confusion, as in now i am reading that these new 8800gt cards might not work on my board , due to diff versions of pic-E , so if i want one of these cards i will have to change my Motherboard.
If this is true i think this is daft from nvidia , and will limit their maket greatly to people that change their motherboards on a yearly basis.
I have at my disposal 2 S939 boards , they are : a8n premium + DFI lanparty NF4 ultraD.
Will any of them work with the new 8800 gt's ? or will i have to use the money that i was going to get the 24" monitor with on a new mb etc.

I'm in a similar situation to you apart from i have an agp port! Its a pain though because i'm still fairly happy with the rest of my system. I have a AMD 64 x2 @ 2.7ghz, 2gig ddr400 ram and an AGP x1950pro. I wish there was a better card to upgrade to, not a 1950xt or 7950 i mean a next gen, faster card but not likely to happen. I've considered getting a new motherboard but just can't be bothered with rebuilding everything and then re-installing windows for a setup i'd probably only end up using for 6> months plus with the prices or DDR2 it would seem daft to be buying a board that doesn't take these. In the end i've decided to just keep what i got and change but the whole lot in 6-12 months

Yes, I'm contributing to that talk. The PCI-SIG who are responsible for defining the PCI-e specification says that it *is* backwards compatible - see my links in that thread.

Seems all will be ok , and should be compatable ok , as posted elsewhere on these forums

Q5 says

Q5: Then PCIe 2.0 must be backward compatible with PCIe 1.1 and 1.0?
A5: Yes. The PCIe Base 2.0 specification supports both the 2.5GT/s and 5GT/s signaling technologies. A device designed to the PCIe Base 2.0 specification may support 2.5GT/s, 5GT/s or both. However, a device designed to operate specifically at 5GT/s must also support 2.5GT/s signaling. The PCIe Base specification covers chip-to-chip topologies on the system board. For I/O extensibility across PCIe connectors, the Card Electromechanical (CEM) and ExpressModule™ specifications will also need to be updated, but this work will not impact mechanical compatibility of the slots, cards or modules. Currently, the PCI-SIG is defining the PCIe CEM 2.0 specification which has been released to members for review at v0.5. There are currently no plans to adapt the PCIe Mini CEM specification for the faster bit rate as the market need has not yet materialized.

So fingers crossed as i have just ordered the monitor :D thus spending any funds that i had for a MB upgrade

PCI-E 2 is backwards compatible, but with PCI-E 1.1, im in the same boat as the op, i was going to get the new GTS that was coming, but can't now as i discovered my board is only PCI-E 1.0, intel 965P chipset.

EDIT:

Ahh i hope thats true in the post above.
