Hi,

Looking to upgrade my pc, not sure what I am best spending £150.00 on though.

Current specs.

CPU: i5 2500k
-CPU Cooler: AC freezer pro rev 2
MOBO: Asus p8z68 V-lx
RAM: 8gb vengeance LP
GPU: ATi 4650 1gb
1st HDD: WDC 200gb HDD
2nd HDD: 1tb samsung spin point hdd possibly failing
PSU: Hiper 650

Looking for performance, don't really play any games anymore. I think my samsung drive is failing as when i boot up it will be in the boot options and appear in windows but after a while it will disappear from my Hard Disk Drives list in windows and occasionally reappear working fine, has cut out mid use etc.

Main uses; Cad, Sketchup, Photoshop, image rendering.

ideas i had for upgrades, ssd? use as main drive then use the 200gb hdd to backup work. gpu, I don't get too many issues gpu wise but in large sketchup models i get frame rate issues when zoomed out but very smooth while zoomed in. Occasionally like to play bf3 for a break from work. External hdd? use this to back up my work on and wait for HDD prices to fall before buying a larger internal drive, would be double the price I paid for my samsung to replace it.

Any suggestions are welcome, think ssd is probably my best bet due to my 2nd hdd being unreliable.

Could my psu be causing my hdd to go offline/disappear? I haven't noticed any strange noises from it at irregular points. If I was watching media from the hdd, pause it then come back to it in 20-30 minutes the media will take a while to start and the hdd sounds like it is spinning up then makes a ding/click noise and the media starts again.

How do these look for ssd and psu?

ssd: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-071-OC
psu: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-037-CS Bit over my budget so might have to put one off for a while.

edit: Il try different ports and a health check, need to do a reboot for the hdd to show up again.
Edit2: ran the windows disk checking software, no problems found. Also ran a 3rd party disk checking program and reported no problems.

Is there any difference in the power supply I have atm? Its about 6-7 years old and never given me any problems at all It was either a 650w or a 530w I understand they had a lot of issues a few years after my psu in the components of newer psu's, think they went bust as a result and just restarted business from a quick look on the web. I don't mind spending the money but seems a bit silly if this is working fine.

M4 SSD - I've no experience with your PSU but would probably listen to others advice...

Also, better cooler and higher overclock if you're open to that and have some extra headroom.

Only some Hiper PSUs had problems, the rest were OK. IIRC it was mainly the modular ones.

Yeah the whole brand went down the pan due to a few models that did have a habbit of going pop. My 480w psu has done me proud really. Especially the first 3-4 years it got beasted.

SSD 100% one of the best upgrades you can give your pc !!!!!!

corsair do nice ones! get atleast 120gb if you want to use it as main hard drive

But also your motherboard supports intel smart response technology so get a 20gb or a 60 gb save yourself some money and use the SSD + hard drive feature will be almost like having a 200gb ssd. with money left over you could buy a new PSU or GPU
