Morning all

I'm looking at upgrading the girlfriends PC for christmas - starting with the graphics card.

Now, it's an A8N-E, so it's got a pci express slot - but, would it run a 5770 or the like?

Any ideas or advice people?

what power supply do you have ?

any pci express card should work, your power supply will probably be a more limiting factor.

also which cpu do you have also ? there is no point buying a high end graphics card if you cpu cant feed it.

Is it what she really wants?

Well...maybe... but given that I've recently addicted her to World of Warcraft... and the current card doesn't seem to want to play nice.

We're planning to upgrade the entire machine some time in the new year, so I'm thinking a 5770 because it's a reasonable card to build the rest of a not hugely expensive system around later.

The CPU is an athlon x64, X2 3800, running at 2GHz.

Current card is a 7800GT - probably burns more power then the 5770!

is a graphics card *really* what your gf would want for christmas  ?

but yes, a 5770 would run fine.

Just got mine a G15 for christmass, and yes when I asked her what she wanted she said a new keyboard :D

5770 sounds good, and depending on Bios updates it might be worth looking at something like a fx60/Opteron 185 both are dual cores running @2.6ghz

if your x2 3800+ has a toledo core there is a good chance it will clock up to 2.5 - 2.7 if your motherboard is a decent clocker. you will pay a hefty premium for either a fx60 or operton 185 which is not worth paying to be honest. the money would be much better spent on upgrading the whole system.
