He's currently got

E6550 @ 2.3 GHZ
DDR2 2GB RAM
an Asrock conroe 1333-D667 mobo
and a 450W psu

I can't remember what his gpu is, but I remember that it was in need of upgrading. he plays at 1440x900.

for £260 would he need a new psu? If he gets something like a 5770 surely the 450w will be fine? Also, will his cpu/ram be a bottleneck?

Just get a 5770 with 2gb more RAM, a 3rd party CPU cooler maybe as well and help him overclock the CPU. Everything should be fine with that resolution.

if i got the right mobo it only has 2 memory slots, so i've listed 2 specs, first one is if he has 1 x2gb stick of memory, 2nd one is if he has 2x1gb sticks.

even tho hes on 32bit the extra memory will help.

Then flog off the old bits to get a new psu?

Okay thanks, I don't think that the psu is a quality brand one though. Hopefully it will withstand the extra voltage

I assume you actually meant current, or power usage, as the voltage stays the same (apart from slight fluctuations) Get your friend to have a look on the side of his PSU, and read the rated current on the different voltage rails, the sticker will look similar to this:
psu2.jpg

That's a poor PSU (5V current is very high, and 12V is low)
This is a better PSU (notice the much higher 12V current rating)

post back what the current ratings are (for 12V mainly), and someone will tell you if it can handle a decent GPU (if I don't get there in time to tell you myself)
