A friend of mine has asked me to spec him an upgrade, he plays games, video rendering, multi tasking and wants something thats going to last him a year or two.

He his happy with his gfx card, psu, hdd's and monitor.

Current rig

E6600
Foxconn (P35a)
4gb of Geil 800mhz
9800GX2
850 psu

Now he wants to upgrade the cpu, motherboard and memory so i specced him the following but would like your advice that it will workfine to gether or if you think i could have chosen better for the money.

I chose the following

Cpu = Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550

Mobo = Asus P5Q Intel P45

Memory = OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Reaper

I wasn't sure if he needs 8500 ram or not as i'm not familar with the cpu and what its overclocking capabilities are.

Comments welcome.

Seems like a slightly pointless upgrade to me - what is he expecting to achieve over the spec he has now? Will he be overclocking?

Well i didn't want to go too much in depth but....

He his building his son a pc for christmas from his old components.

He will give him his current mobo, cpu and ram, he already has a corsair 520w psu and a 8800GTS 320mb gfx card saved to one side for him.

He is in the building trade and the way its plumbeted he want's to upgrade now while he has the cash.

He wants a quad around the £200 mark and will be overclocking it and thats why i chose the faster ram, he also wants to max out the chip on air cooling so what achievable clocks is he looking at?

Aha, makes more sense now :)

Well all of the components look good. The RAM may be overkill depending on the overclock, but I'm afraid I don't know enough about the clocking capabilities of that CPU to pass any further comment.

On a slightly different note, I would recommend your friend puts the money aside now but actually spends later - things move on very quickly in the PC world! The same money will surely go a lot further in December ;)
