I'm currently rocking this system

MSI Z97m Gaming
i5-4670k at 4ghz
Noctua NH-U12s
Samsung 960 Evo M.2 250gb
Samsung 950 Pro 512gb - Steam games
Samsung 950 Pro 128gb - Origin games
Superflower Leadex Gold 650w
2x 4gb Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz
MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X Plus

As I found out last year my PCI-e is only Gen 2 so I'm not getting the full read/write speed for my M.2, it doesn't bother me that much but I'n not taking full advantage

I'm only looking to change the board/CPU/RAM, I was looking at the ROG Strix Z370-Gaming and a 7700K with 8gb Corsair Dominator Platinum, is there a better combination?

Only use the system for gaming (mainly Warframe and some retro games) and Internet usage

slap in second hand i7 K for your board, or wait till later this year for z390 chipset

personally would just stick with current system as it doesn't seem to be slow. CPU should be able to be pushed to 4.3-5ghz

7700K wouldn't work with Z370 boards. You'd want something like:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £582.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Or cheaper Ryzen 1600.

However, I would also wait for new Intel or AMD chips if the system isn't struggling.

This is why you don't need to upgrade. You don't need M.2 for gaming. The difference in load times you will see going to a full blown M.2 (4X pcie 3.0) is so miniscule that you'll kick yourself for spending the money.

Having said that if you're after a better platform, Ryzen 2 or the new Intel CPUs coming out are a nice 8 core upgrade, with hyperthreading, so 16 threads vs your current 4.
Btw RAM prices are stupid right now. So are GPU prices. Just obscene. I could sell my 16GB of RAM for more than 2X what I payed for it almost two years ago. So ridiculous. Also my GTX 1080 G1 gaming which cost me $800 is now $1200 (Canadian prices). Bad time for upgrades IMO...

Playing the games you play I wouldn't upgrade just yet. Maybe buy some more RAM. Maybe replace the CPU. And maybe upgrade your monitor. In other words spend your money elsewhere!
