I currently have a i7-6700HQ, 16GB RAM.. the only thing that really lets it down now is its GTX 970M GPU.

I bought it JUST before they started to bring out the full cards, kicked myself for that!

The screen has its first 'line', so its time I looked for another as this wont play the games I am looking to play in the future, Baldurs Gate 3, Elden Ring etc. I dont want to just play games on lower settings.... I like full immersion so High+ settings. Also powerful enough to connect to the 49" tv for gameplay also.

I have currently whittled a list down to this Legion 5:

Though I would like some advice please.

I was going to go back to a desktop but looking at the prices, I cant see too much difference in the prices atm and I do have a 24" monitor I could hook it up to. Upgrade capability aside... I also like no longer being confined to a (cold) room like I am in isolation.

One query is on the cooling, I heard they are good, my mother has a lower spec legion 5 (that I choose for her.. *my shame at my mother having a more powerful laptop than me a gamer of 30yrs, I cant live this down until I get a new one :p* but she doesnt use it in a graphics extensive way so not tested). This is one reason I short listed legions, for the cooling, especially since I plan on playing High graphics games.

My other queries was the graphics card itself. I, at first, thought this was a 'full card' and not a mobile version like my 970M.. though I would like some advice if it is or isnt. - found the answer to this myself 'Plus all Legion 5 Gaming Laptops deploy full power versions of Nvidia GPU, that's next level elite gaming.'

My budget is £1,000 MAX, though I know they are >£1,300 I am waiting in hopes they come down in the Black Friday deals as the lower priced laptops (£800- £999) wont give me all I was looking for.

What I was looking for Ryzen/Intel i5- i7 ... preferably i7 otherwise it might feel like a downgrade, unless a newer version of an i5 might be faster then my old i7? If so then I could entertain i5 laptops.

RTX 2000 series min.. preferably RTX 3000 though 3070+ gets out of my price range.

16GB RAM at least

500GB SSD

17" screen, cant go smaller after my current 17".

If I could find a desktop at this price that is pre-built and I dont need to add to for a while I would entertain that also.

The pre-built I looked at was this:

I am years behind on whats going on with tech.. how is this compared to the laptop? I know the PSU isnt a great make, but I dont want to have to open it and change anything for a few years at least..... I ignore the lights (I really dislike lights)..

THanks!
