Hi all,

Im sure you see these topics a fair bit recently but im totally out of touch since I stopped playing BF2 around 2008 but have had BF3 pre ordered since march knowing I would have to upgrade before hand.

My system is the following spec:
Core2Duo at 3ghz.
4GB PC8000 Ram (I Think)
Nvidia 8800GT 512mb
Corsair 520W Modular PSU
Dell S2409W

Its been that long since I last upgraded I cant even remember the model of my motherboard off hand but no doubt that will need upgrading aswell because the socket would have changed?

Im looking to spend around £400 if that is possible for a system that should handle BF3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as im totally out of touch nowadays but this current system has done me proud since building it when i left school in 2007!

Thanks, Sam

Corsair PSU should be fine so no need to upgrade, a sandy bridge setup with a decent graphics card would be your best bet...

Which case have you got btw? I take it that you've got a dvd drive, HDD etc

while u will keep your Case, HDD, DVDplayer, Monitor and PSU this is the best u can do with your Budget :)

Personally I'd consider using the budget to make a good core system now. i5K and P or Z series mobo with 4GB RAM and a aftermaket cooler if budget allows. You'll see these rigs spec'd quite often ;)

Use your old gfx card while you wait for the games release. You can spend that time selling your old CPU, RAM and mobo, I'm sure someone on the forums members market would be interested. Especially if the mobo as onboard video.

When the game is released we'll know wether the game favours Nvidia or AMD gfx cards. You'll have an excellent core system so it's just a case of picking the best card in your budget at the time. You'll then have the 8800 spare to sell too......just a thought ;)

Upped my budget in the sense I may aswell do thinks properly and I am thinking of this spec:

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM with FREE TrackMania 2 Canyon PC Game Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM with FREE TrackMania 2 Canyon PC Game £161.99

Then will upgrade my graphics card just before BF3 is released (thinking of a 560TI).

Think I will be okay running this setup along with a Corsair 520W PSU?

Thanks, Sam.

for a similar price this will be a lot better:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail with FREE TrackMania 2 Canyon PC Game £173.99
1 x Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £154.98
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 64GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive £77.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £49.99
1 x Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £25.99
Total : £482.94 (includes shipping: FREE).

motherboard supports crossfire + SLI at x8/x8, will support Gen3 PCIe lanes with an ivybridge upgrade, and will also support your old cooler if its any good as it has mounting holes for socket 775 (as well as mounting holes for socket 1155 and 1156)
RAM performs the same and is cheaper
processor comes with the stock cooler (great as a spare) and a 3 year warranty (instead of a 1 year)

if you wanted to go down to £470.94 as you have in your second spec then i would go for the OEM cooler

nail on the head

sam the best thing to do is wait a few more weeks for the beta to come

there is no point in building blindly in hope its the best bang for buck when the game comes out if driver support for the route you have chosen sucks

Completely agree also. If you can get a 2500k rig while keeping your old GPU, you'll be in a much better position to drop in a GPU later once you know how they perform with BF3.

I have wanted a SSD for a while and since this is the first time I have done a new build since I left school in 2007 I feel now is the time to get one.

When the time comes I might put a bit extra into a graphics card anyway depending on performance.

Thanks for all the advice so far though :)

he is right tho sam, dont buy a 64gb ssd get a 120gb minimum, they go on members market for under £100

Then as others have said nip onto MM and pick up a Crucial M4 120 gb(theres several there going for around £100).
Update gfx later before release of BF3 ?

System now built and all ready for battlefield 3 minus a graphics card,

Think its worth waiting until just before release before buying one?

At the minute im looking at the 560ti but im not sure if it will be upto the challenge especially running at 1920x1080.

It runs on consoles. So it will run on 560ti, and look quite nice at the same time. It's still speculations, so wait for the release really. Getting a GPU will be a matter of days.

The PSU should be good up to a 560ti / 6970. A 570, at a push. I would get a 650W PSU for a 570 and upwards.
