Hey guys,

Okay so GTA V Is near,Now i know we don't know how well it runs yet,But if i find that one GTX 670 2GB isn't enough to run it at (1080p 120hz monitor) with all the bells and whistles on maxed..which i think it wont be,What upgrade path would you recommend?

1)Get another cheap second hand GTX 670 and go SLI (But still have 2gb VRAM limitation)

2)Upgrade to a single Radeon R9 290X Gaming Edition 8192MB

My system specs currently.

  • 3770K
  • Z77X-UD3H
  • Corsair H60i 2013
  • 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws 1600Mhz CL7
  • GTX 670 2GB
  • XFX Pro 650W Core Edition
  • X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro
  • Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD
  • Windows 8.1

Just get the cheapest 4gb 290x, it will max out any game at 1080p.
The 8gb version is not worth it unless you xfire and go for higher resolutions.

Just FYI I’ve read the requirements are relatively tame. At 1080p they suggest a GTX 660, so a 670 should do pretty well. But you’ll need more grunt to make use of your 120Hz monitor with all the bells and whistles. Suggest a ‘970 over a 290X for sub 4K gaming, if you want to take the plunge now. Not that SLI is a bad option, but a single 970 will have fewer issues, more of an upgrade path and will only be a fraction dearer.

It makes some sense to keep this all in mind and wait a little longer to see how it performs IRL if GTAV is going to be the main driver of an upgrade. But TBH we aren’t likely to have any major GPU news or price drops over the next month or so, so the tech landscape will be the same.

How much are you willing to spend?

One 980 would probably be a great choice for just 1080p. Or even a 970 though they seem hugely out of favour since 'VRAM gate'.

I don't think anyone can get more than 60fps as its frame locked to 60 Max from what I heard. I'm hoping my 670 will play it at 60fps easily with most settings high at 1080p. If it doesn't its probably the shadows that cause the most fps drop like it does in gta4.

rockstar were running the game with two 980 @ 4k resolution max setting with solid 60 fps .

so 970 , 980 , 290 , 290x , 780 , 780ti should breeze trough on 1080p

Smartest decision: Wait for release.

Between SLI 670 and a 290X though, I'd go for the 290x, 2gb vram is nothing. Especially once you consider that mods will be out and if you want to further pimp your game then you WILL want more vram.

A GTX 970 would serve you well.

this or get a 970. it comes down to which side you prefer but both cards will do you nicely.

Just put in an order for a KFA2 GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infin8 Black Edition" 4096MB :)

Was between the card above and the EVGA SSC+,The Evga had an extra year warranty and faster clock speeds but,I prefer the design and cooling plus the no coil whine guarantee of the KFA2...Plus the EVGA SSC+ was quite a bit more.
