im trying to update our old second pc so my grandkids can play bf1942 on it without lagging or other issues

I realise its old and prob is best to be replaced altogether but win10 is tied to it and if I change too much doesn't it not want to work with it anymore?

so whats the best things I can do to ugrade

cheers

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

Personally I feel that the pc is too old to justify spending any money on and the money would be better spent on a new build. However, I expect that someone will come along and say that a Phenom II would be a nice drop in upgrade. The problem with that is that the only worthwhile option would be a Phenom II X6 which are going for £50-90 on Ebay which is far too much money. Additionally the motherboard isn't very good and has no vrm cooling at all which will probably result in thermal throttling. Even if you did drop a Phenom II in you will be gaining next to nothing on games that only use a single core as the only Phenom II X6 that has a faster clockspeed than your Athlon II X3 445 are the X6 1090T and X6 1100T which are just 100mhz and 200mhz faster. Having only 4Gb of memory is nowhere near enough and you would need at least another 4Gb plus the GPU is just ancient so needs replacing as well. It all adds up to too much money to spend on a outdated system.

Sorry if I come across rather blunt and to the point but nobody gains anything by sugar coating and beating around the bush.

I would be looking at a budget AMD Ryzen build with a GPU such as a AMD 570 or similar for gaming at your resolution of 1080p. If you post a budget of how much you want to spend then I am sure someone will come along shortly and spec you a build.

thx for reply, bf1942 only plays at 800 x 600

last two weekends he's been playing on that pc and ive been on my pc (another oldy)
we aren't looking to upgrade to play modern games just to play bf1942 without any issues
atm we get a bit of lag so it wouldn't take a lot to stop that?

I can justify spending £50-100 on it purely to entertain him every other weekend
a new pc for me isn't justifiable cos that's my second pc and my main one is still dated but does what I want so if it aint broke why fix it plus we have a lap top that also does what we want it to
I just want to know exactly what to buy for it
plus a new pc straight away id have to pay for another copy of windows 10 cos they don't transfer? is win 10 tied to the motherboard? or are their ways around that?

my daughter has asked me to assemble or buy a pc for his xmas present for their home and the budget will be 200-250
we could add another 50 or so.

we have a 10 yr old case and power supply dunno if they will be any good nowadays

up until 10 yrs ago I used to build pcs twice a year or so for friends/family but have forgotten it all and am completely out of touch

£200-250 is nowhere near enough to build a new pc if it was to be used for gaming. You would be looking at around £500-600 on a pc to have a good gaming experience using new components. For £200-250 your best bet would be a second hand refurbished Dell pc from Ebay and drop in a second hand gpu. That is the price point where it makes more sense to get a console. It's achieveable for a home pc that just does internet browsing, Facebook games and emailing as you could use a APU and not need a gpu.

thanks for that, he is 6 yrs old and I don't think it will be for hardcore gaming or indeed any

ive just found out there is a way I can fit a new motherboard and still retain my windows 10 so that might be the best way forward with my second pc

ive bought second hand/refurbed pc's before and maybe that is the way to go as they cant justify spending that much
like I said we could chip in to make it £300

Assuming you keep the case, hard drive (SSD?) and monitor, you could get away with an APU setup.
The integrated graphics would be perfect for that resolution and give you scope to add an SSD and dedicated GPU later on.
