Hello build wizards

My build is coming up to it's 10th birthday and I fear it's end of life is near. I'm looking at building a new machine that will last another decade as I think if you build well, you will get a lot of mileage out of a machine.

My current spec:
Intel Q6600
Asus P5Q motherboard
3GB RAM
Nvidia 730 GPU (only bought 2 years ago to replace the old failing one)

I have plenty of storage and peripherals that i'd be taking over to the new system but imagine i'd need a new PSU to cover any updates to connections and power useage from certain ingredients (have CPUs gotten less power hungry but GPUs more?) and probably a new case which would allow for newer motherboard connectivity (my existing LianLi only has FW400 and 2 USB2 slots on the front)

I'm not too fussed about keeping the budget the tighest thing ever, as I know if I spend the extra now, i'll have a good system for years to come. Though I should mention I'm not an extreme gamer, I do partake a little, and do a bunch of audio work on the side that is the only stressful thing my current system has to do.

What should I be looking at getting, and should I be looking now or waiting for newer tech to flood the market and take over older gen stuff?

Thanks a bunch chaps

first thing, got to nail a rough budget.

number 2- whats your current monitor you game/work on as i ope thats not 10 years old to :D

no3. if you could list work software used would help track down which CPU would be better suited .

but... either Rzen of Coffeelake would be a MASSIVE UPGRADE! Honestly you wouldn't have to wait as there's a very big leap from your system to budget/lower end current tech now :)

and the one negative about your current storage... they'll all be SATA 2.
SATA 3 HDD are much faster and SSDs would be night and day! most cases now have USB 3 and 3.1 C port on them :)

Actually my monitor is about 9 years old now! It's a Dell 2407FWP - it's been brilliant to me and it took me an age to find one for a good price back then. I am running an SSD as my main drive (and two other internal drivers for storage/backup) which are about 3-4 years old (i'd have been amazed if I had a hard drive last 10 years :D).. so they should be compatible to bring over to a SATA 3 motherboard. I've just been running them backwards on SATA 2 for a while now.

As for software.. I mainly deal with ProTools and Cubase. Both have the ability to store more session data as RAM so i'd like to have more than 3GB on my next system so I can make use of that. They do both run intra-frame HD video while in use. I also do some transcoding (xmedia recode/vlc) and if necessary, Adobe premiere pro for video work. The only game I find myself playing occasionally is DOTA 2.. and I don't run anything else bar the usual office suite for paperwork and documents.

Would a budget of say £750 be reasonable for the tower and gubbins, given my peripherals are sorted?

I'm guessing you've got audio equipment that plugs into it ?

Also seems i5 or faster recommended (amd multicore)
Most of my audio related needs revolve around plugging in drives and copying media to and from - USB2 is a real downer for big projects! Other than that, I have a PCIE soundcard with MIDI for any outboard equipment.

Gone for silent approach since you do audio work ...
Also solid top end board with UK RMA so if anything happens you shouldn't be out of action for a while and UK rep support on here .
Since you've kept your current system a long time, went at the top end with 6 core 12 thread intel ! Should last you another decade :)
Board also has best WiFi , great if your got a BT or Virgin router

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £767.09 (includes shipping: £13.20)

I will say, wait till end of the month (Tuesday) as AMD B450 boards are coming out. These are the same equivalent to Intel's listed above as currently they only have flasgship X470 boards out which is expensive . Aorus B450 is the carbon copy of the above board

Slight GPU upgrade if you fancy Fortnite etc

Marvellous, loving the quiet case and PSU thought! I'll re-assess when the new AMD boards come out but most likely shoot for your intel shopping list. I read AMD sockets should stay fairly consistent, so a future upgrade to a newer/better AMD chip wouldn't mean a whole new otherboard.. but given i'll try and get several years out of the machine I don't think that applies in my situation.. nevertheless i'll have a quick gander before the month is up and order away. Thank you for your brain power sir!

No worries , hoping date is still the same but things change- but don't think it's been pushed back

B450 Aorus Pro technically has same audio as H370 Aorus
