Upgrade for video editing

I am looking at upgrading my ageing PC I have about £550 to spend. I will be using it for editing HD camcorder footage, photo editing / Web design as well as playing the odd game (FPS mostly).

I am thinking that I will need either a core 2 Quad or the i7 to deal with the HD video at an acceptable rate. I would like it to be as future proof as possible as it will likely be a couple more years before I next have a major upgrade.

I will be reusing my case, dual monitors, hard drives, optical drive and GeForce 8800GTS.

I am tempted by the i7 bundle but that would blow all my budget and i'm not sure if I will need a new power supply as well? I currently own a Corsair 530w

Or I could go for the Core 2 Quad Q8400 bundle which is £200 cheaper so I could possibly get a new graphics card as well.

So which do you think I should go for i7 or Core 2 Quad? or would AMD Quad be a good option?

AMD 955 is a great option for that price bracket. I wouldn't get a core 2 quad as they are outdated now. i7 would obviously be best, but for budget you cant go wrong with the AMD 955, and if your not overclocking it's faster stock than the i7.

I wouldnt know where to start with overclocking so I probably wouldnt try that for myself straight away, maybe down the line if I am in need of more power though.

If I went with the AMD 955 would I need to upgrade my Corsair 530W power supply?
