hey

simple question really is it worth me upgrading to gigabit?

i am running cat5e throught the house with 2 linksys 100mb 5 port switches.

All data is stored on my server where it is then used by 5 computers mainly for watching films and programs.

for this to work i will need 2 gigabit switches and 3 gigabit network cards as 3 of the computers only have 100mb cards in

in total it will cost about 70-80 £££

Thanks Look forward to the replys

Simple answer, yes. If you have the money then do it. You will get better throughput if you turn jumbo frames on but your nic and switches have to support jumbo frames.

Theres problems with vista and gigabit, Please make sure your adapters are supported incase you are using vista or planning to in the future.

Something to do with NDIS 6.0 drivers being needed.

im curently using xp on all desktops and server 2003 on server do plan to go to vista but in 6months to a years time.

is that gona be a problem?

I've found all my pcs sync at gigabit but vista to vista transfers are slow, i have the 8 port version of the switch you are about to buy so not really sure either way whats up.

If the cablings already there, theres no point changing to CAT6; 5e will handle gigabit fine, it only when you go to 10GigE you need to worry.

thats what i thought and i dont fancy climbing round the atic there are spiders there

just ordered them :) with my new mouse and 500gb external drive
