I’m looking to upgrade my GPU but ….

It’s for 1080P
Don’t want to spend a lot of money
Don’t expect to run everything on very high, just want to get of Low settings and get some decent frame rates.

Games - for example, I have Horizon Zero, Forbidden West
I like the Assassin Creed and God of War games

When I say not a lot, it really depends on what is on offer, £350 or less would be good but I might push more for a really good deal, new or reputable used - looks like new because I can’t access marketplace any more.

Talking of ‘used’ any idea why can’t I see the classifieds on here any more? Just worked that out, don’t have enough posts any more.

Accepting that 8GB is not ideal and looking at the Overclockers store, and picking the cheapest option I can get the following

RTX 5060Ti 16GB - £380
RX 9060 XT 16GB - £315

Is the 5060Ti better, and is it £65 better.

I know that the 5060 uses newer memory (GDDR7) than the 9060 (GDDR6) but that’s about it, and I don’t even know how much the better the GDDR7 is I just presume it is better.

Or if I wanted to limit my spend I could go with an 8GB 5060 or 9060 XT for around £250.

Or should I be looking at a second-hand higher tier.

Cheers,

Nigel

I'd stay clear or the 8GB cards if you can. Having 16GB will help your card with longevity as games increase in textures compared to the minimal uplift in cost from 8GB to 16GB and you seem to hold your card for a long while.

I'd more likely go 9060XT over the 5060ti 16GB but that's just me. I don't see the extra £65 as worth the uplift.

What part does the CPU play?

I’m away from home for a few days so can’t say exactly what it is until I get back home. But I know that it would have been mid-range (I never spend a lot), pretty sure it’s a Ryzen 5 but don’t know the generation or speed, probably about 5 years old.

But I’m assuming it won’t be a great match so what impact would that have.

Are you thinking of future proofing should I want to go to higher resolutions in the future or is 8GB too little for 1080P?
Some games want more than 8GB, and performance falls off a cliff when the 8GB is full, so you'd be needing to buy a 16GB card if that happened and so you may as well have just got one to begin with. If you were playing stuff like league of legends or counter strike, it might be different, but 5 mins on google tells me some people with 8GB are finding it insufficient in the games you mentioned.
These are the sorts of reviews we have in mind:

Arguable either way.
Seeing as you're talking about cost a lot I'd say just get the 9060XT because it's cheaper and will do what you need.

If I was you I'd buy this, assuming it fits in your case and your power supply is sufficient.

Post your full specs when you get home and we can answer that properly, not like you're ordering until then anyway.

i wouldnt bother your card will play anything fine at 1080 for a good while. let the 5070 gtx drop to £400 within next 3 - 6 months bag one of them. the others for 350 just arnt worth it and will be poor cards within couple of years.

My specs are

Motherboard : MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
RAM: 2 x 8GB DDR4 2133 MHz
PSU: Corsair TX 650

All running stock, nothing is overclocked.

Cheers,

Nigel

id just stick in a 5700x or even a 5600x for now and then wait for a drop on a 5070. 5700x 8 core would future proof system a bit too.they aint much if you look about.

I'm not against changing the CPU, but from the benchmarks I have seen there often isn't very much difference between the 3600 and 5600. On some game there is a significant increase but on many others just a couple of FPS. And it seems to be the sort of games I like where there is little difference.

5700x would be two cores extra and quicker. for future safety a lot better really. also they often go for under 100 quid.

But extra cores are often not that useful for gaming. I looked at the benchmarks for the 5700X and they are not that much better than the 3600 for gaming. Not saying that there isn't an improvement, but it doesn't seem much for the £100 I would need to pay for the CPU.
