I'm trying to decide whether for what I can get with my budget, I should upgrade my 2080 Super or stick with it for now.

My budget is £600 and I've been looking at the 4070 or the 7800 XT which seem to be around the same price.

Rest of my system is a 9700k w/ 32GB RAM

It is a lot of money for a fairly modest upgrade.

I'd say more worthwhile if you're struggling to play at your chosen resolution and the upgrade would help you out, otherwise I'd prefer a 7900 XT.

if you can’t budge anymore than £600 I’d look at second hand 3080 for less than £400 in here - alternatively I picked up a MSI 4070 Ti gaming X trio for £679 brand new and compared to many cards I’ve had (not 2080s) but 3060 Ti would be the closest and it’s a big upgrade..

Of those two the 7800 XT is the better card. It's just that little bit faster in rasterisation performance and a bit cheaper to boot.

A second hand 3080 or 6800 XT would also be a viable option of you're happy to go that way

I’m in a similar position and I think my next upgrade will be the 7800xt, unless there’s any movement in other prices

Does your budget take selling your 2080 into account? You’d get £200 for that (maybe a bit more depending on model)

I'm looking at the 7800xt and the 4070 I can get them for about similar price (7800xt £50 cheaper) but I'm kinda stuck on what to pick. My last few AMD cards I've had 9800ct, 1800xt I always had basic driver issues so I'm sat here worried I'll experience it again. With Nvidia I've never had issues.

Buy the 4070, or else whenever you have any kind of crash or issue, you'll immediately start blaming the driver and regret your choice :p

If anyone making the same choice hasn't seen it:

I would stick with nvidia, in my experience when it comes to upgrade time the nvidia cards are much much easier to sell than amd.
Nvidia did a great marketing job.

I guess a 4070 / 4070 Ti would a decent upgrade

Those cards you mentioned are almost 20 years old. Hell, they weren't even AMD cards since they predate AMD buying ATI in 2006. The drivers aren't even remotely the same as they were back then. Catalyst Control Center and the like were binned a long time ago. I've switched back and forth pretty regularly between the two over the past decade and there's simply no real difference in driver quality between the two. Both have issues occasionally, both are generally fine usually. The biggest and most memorable problem I've had was actually with Nvidia, where World of Warcraft had a horrible flickering issue for over six months (from early December 2020 to late June 2021) before they finally fixed it with a driver update. It was extremely annoying as someone who was playing it every day at the time, but it didn't make me swear off Nvidia cards for life.

I've never had a problem selling cards of either brand. Nor have I observed anyone else struggling to sell any sensibly-priced card either on the MM here or on Ebay. They're all snapped up quickly these days, with only the overpriced stuff left alone.

That was the case a few years ago but doesn't seem to be the case any longer. I've had no issue flinging my Vega 64, RX 5700, or 6700XT very fast, like 1-4 days tops. Then again, I don't demand an absurd amount for my used GPUs but price them roughly 60% of what equal performance would cost on the day of the sale.

.... that is some old decrepit hardware your referring to there good sir. Those driver problems are long gone. Just go to the 2 driver threads for AMD and Nvidia and take a look at the last 5 pages on each and note the date as well of the posts. That should give you a rough idea of what is going on.

I just went for a £530 4070 from a Vega 56. Decided against the 7800xt due to the power draw + lack of DLSS which is important in one of the games I play.

Whether you upgrade is dependent on whether you are happy with the performance now - outside the value of your card dropping, you can always wait if it isn't a problem.

However, because of your CPU, the RX7800XT at £480 is a decent choice because in newer DX12/Vulkan games AMD cards do better on older CPUs.

Most reviews use very high end CPUs from AMD or Nvidia so it's not quite evident normally. Many here use the newest CPUs too and upgrade every two years.

Plus you will get a copy of Starfield Premium too which you can sell or use. This makes the RX7800XT cheaper in reality than an RTX4070. Also the RX7900XT can be had for almost £700 with Starfield Premium if you shop around.

The extra VRAM of the AMD cards should be useful especially if you are keeping the card for 4 to 5 years like your current one. FSR3 is also coming out too which has its own frame generation, etc. This will extend the lifespan of the RX7800XT.

Drivers are not an issue IMHO, as I have dual rigs(one Nvidia and one AMD) and they seem much of a sameness.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Most games I play run fine on the 2080s, MW2, Diablo 4, but I tried starfield and found it struggling to run at anything other than lowest settings. My monitor is 1440p 165hz. It looks like the 7800 XT is the way to go

Starfield like COD is AMD sponsored so seems to do quite well on AMD cards.
