Hi y'all...

I've done a pretty extensive search, but still cant decide on the answer...

I've been running an AMD 64 3800+ mated to a 6800GT for the past year or so and while it runs great, I'm starting to get itchy feet for an upgrade.. :D

I only really play COD2 and Quake4, at 800*600, but I'd like to ramp it up to my tft monitors max of 1280*1024.
If I try that at the moment, the fps suffers big time..

I'd been thinking of getting another (secondhand) 6800GT and SLIing them, I reckon that would cost me about £110 but is that the best solution ?

Obviously alternatives are...
sell my 6800gt for ~£100

buy a 7800GT - will this give me about the same fps as 2*6800, and only cost me ~£50 net

buy a 7900GT - will this be much better than the above ? guess it would cost me ~£150 net

So I guess the real question is.. is a 7900GT noticeably faster than 2*6800gt when running at 1280*1024...

2x6800GT in SLi is about on par with a 256MB 7800GTX iirc :)

so logically a 7900GT which is on par if not a bit better than the 7800GTX would be a slight upgrade.. but i wouldnt expect the world, but i would expect some quality clockage

Im in same situ, find my 6800gt's just struggling at the settings id like, Im gonna try oblivion soon so ill let that decide, :)

A 6800 GT does not suffer in Quake 4 @ 1280 x 1024
Are you sure everything is installed properly?

Well... I've just completed a total re-install of winxp, latest nvidia drivers, mobo drivers etc..
Not re-installed q4 yet, but with cod2..

I get an in game fps around 40-60 with all the options on at 800*600, dropping considerably if I run at 1280*1024.

I really want to be getting it sat at the max 91fps at 1280*1024, with all the goodies on, and not dropping down when I get into a complex map, or big firefight :)

I had 2 WCed 6800gts in my old PC, it used to run Doom3 at 1600x1200 really well so you should be fine at 60fps (the maximum it will run at btw) in Quake 4. I agree with the others however, sell the GT and get a 7900gt, it'll be quieter, less power hungry and slightly quicker than an SLI 6800gt setup.

rofl 40-60 at 8x6 your doing something wrong i get much more than that with a xp 2.4 and a 6800gt at 1024 res

in tes oblivion i get aound 20-60 fps depending on what i am doing thats max settings with hdr at 1024 res

do you have 8x aa on? thats a performance killer

What 3dmark scores do you get with those SLI 6800GTs. They should easily manage 1280x1024 with 4x AA and AF on in Q4 and Doom3.

I used to have twin 6600GTs and they managed the above 2 games perfectly.

hehe re read the thread, he doesnt have 2x6800 he has one, he is contemplating on getting another or a 79/800gt but i recon he is doing something wrong for that poor performance
