Hi All

Current rig is:
3600X
B450 Tomahawk
32GB DDR4
3080FE

I game at 1080p and while the system is holding up well it's not particularly smooth in Doom TDA or Indiana Jones. I like high settings and ray tracing! I'm inclined to look at the CPU as a bottleneck given it's age.

What CPU/mobo would be a good partner for the 3080 preferably with headroom to upgrade the graphics card in the next year or two? I expect I'll have to go DDR5 at the same time. I've no budget in mind but under £700 would be good.

Many thanks!

if i were you i'd be tempted to try and pick up a used 5700x3d - they were about £120 new a few months back but they've jumped up to ~200 quid now. bank the rest and put it toward a full upgrade at a later date.

..and thirded. 3080 is plenty fast enough still if you aren't looking at a full platform upgrade. Whack in a 5700X3D, set CO to -30 from the off and those chips tend to happilly run along fine.

That mobo BIOS supports the X3D chips from around the end of 2022 so check your version and update as required (with the old CPU installed)

thinking about it more, if you did go the 5700x3d route you could replace/upgrade your monitor to something like a 1440p if you fancied it and still have money left over - am4 is still a perfectly good base for a system and paired with a 3080 you'd be good for a couple more years.

for context i upgraded my 3700x to a 5700x3d when they were 120 quid (on the same mobo you are on) and when the prices are right i'll be replacing the current gpu with a 9070 - i play at 1440 on 27inch monitor and confidently expect this system to last me a good few years yet.
