I'm looking for a major upgrade around May/June, the works !

At the moment I have an AMD 4000+, 2GB Corsair , 8800GT Rev2, 24" Dell, I can play CoD 4 at max.

But, I want a dual core option with slightly increased speed, I don't want to mess about buying/installing another OEM copy of windows, and was thinking AMD Opteron 185 ?

I've heard good things about them and can get one new for £150.

What do you think ?

Thanks for the feedback.

I got a new 175 for £80 and its clocked to 3.0ghz on air at stock volts. i wouldn't spend £150 though for the 180. If you're looking at that kind of budget you should consider a whole platform upgrade. Are you saying your Vista is tied to your motherboard?

I've got OEM XP on this machine. I would have to buy another copy for an upgrade.

How does your Opteron do ?, what did you upgrade from ?

Cant you just phone up microsoft and get it transferred. Say your motherboard broke or something.

Would not expect any problems with windows if just changing cpu - motherboard can be a problem but cpu is only a small chang- never had a problem myself when only change was cpu.
I have an Opteron 185 myself ; paid nearly£200 a year or so ago - nice chip.
They sell in the states now for $230 which equals about £115.
£150 seems a bit steep - if I could sell mine for that I'd probably take it and invest in a cheap core duo+gigabyte m-board + 2gb ddr2 (all approx £50 each) - sell your existing cpu + ram and you might get enough to buy a new oem xp/vista.
Result - after overclocking it - a much faster machine.
From what I have read I am sure my comments above are correct BUT i do like my Opty - runs at 2.79 at lower than standard volts.:)

Dont be restricted by your OEM :) I have changed motherboards a further twice since getting Vista and XPMCE OEM's and all you do is phone up when you get asked to and just tell them your motherboard broke and then you were sent out a replacement, easy and gives you quite a good few options!

Have read own posting and realised not as clear as I intended - I meant to say have never had to ring etc when only cpu was changed.
I remember reading somewhere that xp has , like, a points system for each bit you replace and once you get to the level that Microsoft consider appropriate then you will require their permission (usually obtained via phonecall) before windows will install.
The two biggest ponts scorers are , I believe, motherboards and (replacement) harddrives.
Vista is , allegedly , a much tougher propsition.:(
Agreed that if you do have to ring - be careful how you xplain why your having to ring- they may turn you down:eek:

A few days ago I went from 650i chipset motherboard, E6600 cpu and an old X1900XT to a new P35 board, Q6600 and 8800GTS and my OEM copy of XP didn’t both one bit!!

In the past I’ve had it ask me to re-activate just from an updated GFX driver!!

I’ve never had Microsoft turn me down, I’ve reactivated countless copies of XP over the phone with no problems what so ever.

Oh and for heaven’s sake don’t spend 150 pound on an old AMD x2 cpu!

Grab a second hand opteron 170 for no more than 50 pounds.
