Hi guys, i'm probably going to hear the words "overkill" off a few people but hear me out...

I'm currently running this:

Q6600 @ 3.2ghz
IP35Pro
4gb ddr2
4870x2

I'm gaming at 1366x768 which I know is pitiful by today's standards but i'm just a casual BF3 player. The thing is, you would expect the 4870x2 to perform in bf3 at that resolution but simply put.. it doesn't. Support in catalyst for HD4000 series ended long ago (before bf3 came out). I have tried maybe 4 or 5 crossfire releases since the games release but it runs like dog s&!t. In game fps states between 25-50 fps but its choppy as hell (feels like a 4 or 5 frame skip sometimes). When I turn off crossfire it runs smoother but the game teabags the life out a single 4870 so where I gain in smoothness, I lose in overall fps.

My question is this, if I said I can get a HD6950 and shift my 4870x2 and be only £30 out of pocket, would it be a worthwhile upgrade given my res? I know the 4870x2 is regarded as still a fairly decent card with regards to raw power but lack of support means i'm not seeing it on current gen games.

Cheers

Kyle

I had a 6950(unlocked to 6970 shaders and overclocked) in an identical system to you!
Didn't have BF3 then though but I did play BF:BC2 in that very well :)

I still own a 4870x2 myself along with a 6970. When I was cleaning my system a while ago I replace the 6970 with the x2 an the performance was abysmal in anything but low at 1080p(I.e stuttering etc). Definitely migrate yourself onto a 6950 or even maybe a 7850 which ever has the better pricing.

For £30 outlay I would. You'll reap improved minimum and average fps, as well as smoother performance and a greater level of driver support. Ideally, the higher you can upgrade the better, but even if you can't push further, for £30 a 6950 is a no brainer. :)
