Hi all.

I'm looking to replace my 4870x2 soonish- served me very well.

I play at 1920x1200.

Interested in the 6990 but put off by the price. I've seen reviews that put 6950 crossfire very close in performance for considerably less.

I've got a corsair tx750, I'm thinking that should be enough power for either?

cheers

Well you can flash certain 6950 to be a 6970, as there is very little difference between 2 X 6970 in Crossfire that an 6990. I had thought that the 6990 was able to utilise it memory differently but I'm now not so sure.

For my money I think I'd just get a couple of 6950s, flash 'em and run in Crossfire.

I just downgraded from a HD5970 to a GTX480. No more driver issues and it will most games at that res without any issues. The best thing is that it only cost £200.

IMO...I think it depends on if your 4870x2 really can no longer handle the games you play. Yes going to a 6950 (and flash to 6970) you would definitely notice improvement, but may not really make you go "wow" going from a 4870x2, considering 4870x2 itself ain't exactly a slow-poke. Also considering that you'd have to spend £200, the cost to performance increase over the 4870x2 might not seem worth it.

6970 does consume quite a bit of power, and run quite hot...if comparing to the 5000 series and GTX460/GTX560 etc...if I were you...and can still play most of my games at acceptable level, I'd wait a bit longer and get the 28nm cards at the end of the year.
