Gentlemen, I have not been watching the graphic card situation for a while but did a quick research and found that the ATI 7970 is best card at the moment.
But on this occasion i feel that i would like to go for a mid range card. Would i be right in selecting the ATI 7950 as a replacement for my 4870x2?

The 7950 is not a mid range card, though I think it would be a sensible upgrade from the 4870X2. If you don't want to stretch that far, then consider a 7850 / 7870 + a hearty overclock. To get as much as you can out of whatever you purchase, I'd strongly recommend looking to buy a new cpu / mobo, and in the meantime overclock your current cpu as much as possible.

If you can afford it, 7950 + an overclock (this card can do 1ghz on stock volts) will be worth the upgrade over your 4870X2.

But I have a feeling your CPU, even at 3.8ghz (you have mhz in your sig ;) ), will bottleneck the card.

anything is worth upgrading over that 4870 it isnt direct x 11

i agree with the cpu however its a bit slow for a 7950

Hi guys,
Yes CPU is running stable at 3.800 i wont push it any more. Im getting loads of freezing and ATI recovered from failure displays.
ATI are not doing any more drivers for this card any more only legacy drivers. So i thought i would upgrade the card before i upgrade my whole system.

Be cheaper to wait and get all in one go.

Since u wont benefit really from just the card, theres faster hds now, the cpu is a dualcore, faster ram.

You probly can keep the PSU if its still in decent nick.

But a card alone is pointless like everyones saying, play games at dx9 -10 then buy a full new pc.

Upgrade to a Q6600 and get a 7950 and that will be fine with a good/semi decent overclock on the CPU. Should last a good while still :)

Saves you replacing the mobo as well.

Thats like £300+ is that worth it you think?

This is why i always buy systems instead of upgrades £150 for my card is fine because it can sell it for half of that or even keep it and buy a cardless system.

But £300 and all the fiddleing about? He will need a new cpu fan also so even more :\

For £450 he can buy an OC bundle and a cheaper card that will last a lot longer.

Bundle

Card

If he goes down that route, he should really plump for a 2GB card.
